Default How much to torque head Bolts ?

The thing i have says 22ftlbs But Im leaking coolant at the bottom of the head now ----- I did get this off of ls1howto

Apparently in addition to 22ftlbs they say to do this.............

"Ok, now for a GREAT tip from Scott99Z. Take a felt tip marker and draw a horizontal line on the head of each bolt. This is very important.

Now, using the sequence illustrated above, turn all 10 15mm bolts an additional 90 degrees using a large socket wrench and a lot of muscle. Try to get as close to 90 degrees as possible...you may have to do multiple turns of 30 degrees or 2 turns of 45 degrees. When done all the lines on the bolt heads should be totally vertical."

I did not do that instead just the 22ftlbs

HELP..... This is the 3rd time i will be tearing my car appart and im getting tired of it

yeah. Your going to need to go back and torque those bolts. Depending on how much you've run your motor now you may have to put new headgaskets on as well. The angle torquing is abolutely required. The 22 ftlbs is just the stage 1 torque which just evens up the positions of all the bolts for an equal starting point. Sorry man. Take it apart asap!

First stage tightens it only partially to allow the surface and fasteners to mate to each other, and then you tighten it all the way in one or more stages after that, usually front the middle out, but check the instructions to make sure. Without the stages, the head would warp and possibly not align itself correctly. Without completing the stages....well, you'd have a very loose head. If you really ran it without torqueing it all the way, I'd replace the head bolts with brand new ones. Running any fastener at partial torque greatly fatigues and shortens the life of the fastener. It's better to go too tight than too loose, but best to do it right.

It's 22 ft/lbs for the 10mm bolts at the top of the heads. Don't do those to 22 lf/lbs. then 45 degrees and 45 degrees to get another 90 degrees. You will likely strip the block, bolts or both. The 15mm bolts start at 37ft lbs. and go 90 and 90 in a pattern. The short 15's on in the middle row and at the front and back only go an additional 50 degrees, not 90. Follow the procedure on LS1Howto and you will be fine. What year block do you have? Pre 2001 should use the graphite gaskets because that is what you had and the MLS gasket won't seal as effectively. 2001 and later can use the mls gaskets and get a good seal. Also did you clean the deck really carefully? Another really important thing to do is to clean the bolt holes completely. Use a straw and air pressure to blow any dirt and coolant out then use a rolled up paper towel and stuff it in there and clean out any gunk. Then grind some flutes into an old bolt and run that it ot the bottom and repeat the procedure until the hole is completely clean and dry. There will be locktight from the old bolts in the threads. If you don't do this and torque the bolts to yield any dirt or coolant in the holes will get get comperessed and split the block at the bottom of the holes. The last thing you should do is get a new set of head bolts. The locktight from the pack you just installed has been compromised and will be in there.

I would take it to a shop at this point. I sense a cracked block in your future if you continue doing your own head swap.

You're going to have to when you blow a head gasket!
22ft-lbs

They need to be torqued to 70lbs on the final pass.

The misinformation on this site is absolutely mind blowing lately.

Stock factory bolts are angle torqued! Not 70 ft/lbs!

My thoughts.

If they are all tightened to only 22 lb-ft, then you have likely leaked coolant into the block and lifters at this point. I would first get the service manual and don't follow ls1howto. You do so at your own peril. They you need to clean everything good and dump the oil. Then re-installed from the lifters up following the service manual and tighten the head bolts per the manual.

If you have dumped oil in the coolant you have been very lucky so far you haven't spun a bearing.
