the car is a 97 vette, minor heads/cam, had a 2.73 now has a 3.42 and TCI breakaway. the TC and gears were installed recently and now the car has a weird vibration from about 2100-2500. it only vibrates in that range and it will only vibrate when gas is applied. so if your coasting its not shaking. it will do this in neutral as well as drive. havent tried reverse yet. i tried disconnecting the TC from the torque shaft that stopped it so i thought the TC was unbalanced. i even rotated the TC on the shaft still the same. TCI felt the same and sent out a new breakaway, but the problem didnt go away. so now i have no idea whats causing this. the new TC is not as bad as the first one, but its still there. the TC slid right in no problems. replaced the pump seal while in there too. im stumped as to what would cause this. any ideas or tests i can try. the TC works great except for the vibrating issue. Thanks
I have a similar issue with mine right now. It has a vibe at 3800-4000 after a TC and gear change. I've done the same thing with disconnecting the TC. I could still feel the vibe at the same RPM just a little bit. I think I have a bent flexplate... The car is going into the shop next week to have the problem looked at. I'll let you know the results.
ok but how did you bend it? see this car didnt do anything odd before the TC install. but as soon as the TC was put in it started the vibrating. so a bent flexplate doesnt sound possible to me. of course that doesnt mean that its not the problem. thanks for the reply. anybody else have any ideas or things for me to try.
I really am not sure what you guys are dealing with here but I would think that if it were a bent flex plate the vibration would be unbearable and be present all the time!
well lets talk about how to put a TC into a vette.
all i did was drop the rear craddle. lowered the trans down(not lower than what GM says is ok) then disconnected the trans from the torque tube. dropped the trans out slid the new converter in and then reattached the trans to the torque tube. raised it back up into position. raised the craddle back into position and voila done. i dont see anything wrong with doing it that way. does anyone else? is there a better quicker way possibly since it looks like im going to be doing this for a third time? thanks

I think its the flexplate not sure as of yet, could be something else also. The process of swapping out the TC isn't very hard, its just takes a lot of time to disconnect everything. From what you wrote it sounds like you did what most of us do to change out the TC. I do believe that typically most also pull out the drive shaft/ torque shaft though. I took my new TC out and had its balance checked, it was 15 grams off (Vigilante). I was told by the manufacturer that you wouldn't feel a vibe from a TC unless it was 25 grams off.... I put the stock TC back in and the vibe is still there I'm kind of at a loss at this point. the car has 5500 miles on it and it wasn't there before so that only leaves a few things that could have caused the onset of my vibe. Flexplate and the 2 driveshaft bearings. I just hope that the vibe hasn't caused additional issues with my drivetrain!
As for the vibe not being present at al RPMs, I chalk that up to the possibility of the harmonics of the rotation and not a lot of weight out of balance. If you hit it just right the vibe builds on itself. Of course I'm not going to know for sure until it is fixed.
I saw this discussed in a previous thread about 4 months ago. The search function is not working very well and it is hard to find out what the problem was and how it was managed.
right but the only problem is that this is the second converter thats doing this as well. ive been in contact with both TCI and my trans guy and they both agree that its got to be something with the TC. doesnt make sense for it to be the trans. so i dont know. im completely confused
