Default Hardcore Rear suspension question inside

We were looking at the suspension today and had an idea. Could you cut and reweld the aluminum mount that holds the bearings and the axles? I dont know the technical name for it but its the piece that the upper control arm bolts to. My idea is to cut .550 out and reweld the the piece.

Phil,

That will change the suspension geometry quite a bit. And since you drag race, you are not trying to get more static negative camber in the back, are you ?

OR are you trying to lengthen the rear arm to minimize camber gain ?

I think you must be talking about the spindle, the piece that connects the upper a-arm to the lower one.
Probably to fit 15" wheels huh?
I think making this piece shorter may effect camber quite a bit during movement, but it might work for dragracing.
Would have to make sure and get very good penetration in the weld.
Also may need to consider a loss in the hardness of the metal, it may not be as strong after the heat from welding.
If you get brave and do it let us know how it works out

I am trying to go to 15" wheels. I was thinking about it last night and if you could modify the top of the spindle so the arm mounts ontop of the spindle vs underneath you should be able to fit some 15" WELD Alumi-Stars.
15 x 3.5 - 4" up front

15 x 10 - 6" back spacing rear

I was also thinking about building a bracket that bolted to the rear spindle. The bracket would have the balljoint flipped upside down so that the mounting height for the A-Arm is the same just bolted top side vs bottom side.

Phil97SVT,

I started a tread about this a couple weeks ago :

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=933472

LG posted that he is working on some kind of spindal, A-arm setup that will be availible by X-mas time. I PM himed for more info, but never got a response

I have talked to a few other shops, and highly qaulified alum. welders and they all refused to modify a stock spindal, and suggested that was a very bad idea. I was going to have one modified just to test fit a wheel, and then have a billet spindal made from the test peice, but I have not made it very far along with that project.

I too want to put aluminstars all the way around, I have heard the front is easy to get 15"s on, but I am not sure what the best way is, what are your plans for the front end ?

Thanks !

We should have our spindles by Jan or Feb.

we already make a billet road racing spindle. These will be here soon.
