I have a 1998 C5 and lately the "Check Engine" light has been comming on. I took it to the Chev Dealer and spent $$$ for a diagnostics. It came up negative and the light remains on (most of the time). Another Dealer told me that it could be the computer. I'd hate to spend more $$$$ to try to extinguish this annoying light. Does anyone out there have a suggestion(s) for a simple quick fix. By the way...it runs perfectly.
I have been through this! If your check engine light comes on and goes off and you have no DTC's stored, you could be expierencing an engine miss. If the light stays on it will throw a code which willbe (10 PCM 0300 )
I would tell you to change the computer too if it was going to line my pockets with $$$$$$$$$$$$
Do you detect any engine roughness or hesitation under heavy load or WOT??
If this is not the problem, please let us know and we will keep digging!
I went back to the receipt from a month ago and it stated that there were no codes. However if I remember right, the check engine light was not on at that particular time. The engine runs smoothly. I had this problem on my 1988 and just popped out the instrument cluster and pulled the bulb. I guess it's not that simple with C5's. HELP>>>>>>
With the check engine light still on I would guess that there are codes
present. Follow the procedure in this link and let us know if it was
helpful. http://www.stengel.net/diccodes.htm
I apologize if you already know how to do this, but am just trying to
be helpful. Good luck.
Thanks guys for the help. I checked the codes and got P0171 and P0174 which are Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1 & 2. Now what the heck does this mean other than I'm probably running lean on both sides? How can it be corrected? I did clear the codes. Wioll they come back if the lean status isn't corrected?
Make sure every fitting on your intake system and the bridge are tight, those codes come up frequently when you change to an after market intake system and have a leak. After you have everything tightened down tried to reset the codes to see if they come back, I don't think that this is a serious problem you just need to rub on it a while.
in answer to your question, yes,if the "lean condition"isn't fixed, the light will come back on.
as long as you know you have no air/vacuum leaks anywhere and fuel pressure is ok.you may have a bad airflow meter.if this started after cleaning and oiling your airfilters[saw you run k&n's]maybe you have excess oil on the flow meter element.your faults are for long term fuel trims[your lean through the whole rpm band].other possibilities for running lean-bad front 02's,secondary air check valves stuck open, etc.i'm willing to bet though you have a bum flow meter, just my .02

I had the same codes come up about a month ago. I cleaned the MAF and it cleared the problem. It was quite dirty, and I have no idea where all the crap came from. I changed the air filter about 2 months prior to having the problem.
