I have this annoying noise. Having been around cars all my life I would have bet the ranch it was a bad lifter. Sooooo...... away I go and put in a new set of lifters.. I checked pushrods and rocker arms at the same time. All appeared fine.
Guess what... Tick Tick Tick Tick
Had it not been we found a serious problem while taking it apart I would be going postal!!
I am now thinking a noisy injector.. Using a stethascope, the noise appears loudest when you touch the intake or the injectors. Of course it is the same beat as the injectors or lifters.
Any idears or suggestions would be appreciated. It's going away for the winter and I would like to put it away running correctly.
Need a little more information but it could be the infamous piston slap.
What year car? Does it do it at cold start up and go away after warm?
How many miles on the clock? Do a google search on piston slap. You'll get tons of info. I thought I had a noisy lifter too and it turned out to be piston slap. Mine goes away after the engine gets to temperature but it is annoying.
Doesn't sound like piston slap. Doesn't sound like a wrist pin either.Thats whats pizzin me off. I would think I should be able to figure this out.
About 54k on the car. It does get a little quieter when it gets warmer. I am sort of hoping the new lifter(s) will quiet down after a few hundred miles..
I have the same sound. The dealer is trying to help me figure out what the hell it is. So far thier scientific analyisis has led them to the conclusion that it is the ....OIL!!! idiots
Actually, the oil may be the problem. GM has a service bulletin out about a pinched o-ring seal on the oil pump. Basically, oil ring gets pinched & causes the oil the aerate. When the oil get to the nice hydraulic lifters the air causes the lifter to collapse suddenly, which sounds like a bad lifter. Mine had the same problem. Luckily I found the service bulletin before replacing the lifter. Ask you dealer to pull it up.
Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick. Sounds like it may be an exhaust leak? Do you have headers. Mine ticks now after header install, but I lost 1 bolt for the header flange and haven't replaced it yet. So I can hear it "ticking" when standing beside it while running. Of course, I've got piston slap, and every other noise that C5 owners notice. But just from my recent experience, the tick, tick sound in my car is being caused from the headers being installed, minus one bolt. I would call my piston slap Smack, Smack, instead of Tick, Tick ... you know what I mean. Good Luck
I had a ticking noise that turned out to be an exhaust leak. I couldn't track it down to save my life. It wasn't until a 2400 mile road trip that the I noticed part of the exhaust manifold gasket starting to pop out (mr gasket, after-market). Ticking also started getting a lot louder after the trip. Changed it out to an oem gasket.
It was actually loudest at start up, like a bad lifter. Then would quiet down a little when it warmed up.

what type of oil was that for? what do they recommend we use?
My 01 has what’s been called piston slap. Does it when cold but goes away when it gets warm! Is there any thing to do about it? Or don’t worry about it. I sure would hate for the warranty to run out and then it decide to put a rod out the side! Been there, done that!

LS1s are known to tick when cold due to carbon build-up. There's a de-carbonizing procedure that's easy and cheap. I suggest you try this first, before spending additional money.

is that just buying that stuff at NAPA that u put in ur engine that "restores" engine life......?
