Default NY Emission test next year changing???????

I think next year the test will not require dyno for any 96 and new OBDII cars they will just plug into the computer and check things
Can they tell if you tuned it? Does it require the car to throw codes to fail it? Any info is appreciated? Thanks for any insight

Unless the OBDII computer can tell the smog computer NOX and HC numbers, then maybe. However, as far as I know, the only way to see what a car's output is the sniffer test.

not so much the tune, but let's say you had the rear o2 sensors [because of headers]eliminated and had the rear o2's turned off[deleted out of the pcm],this will cause the rear o2's not to set in readiness/inspection.that's what will get picked up.even though you don't have any faults or check engine light on,if the rear o2's are turned off readiness will not set in that pid.same goes for no cats, misfires[for high lift/duration cams],etc.

John,
It depended where you lived in NY. Here in upstate all they did for the last few years was a quick visual inspection this cost an additional $5. They only cared that the cats were in place not that they actually had anything inide of them. As your test gets a little less difficult ours will be getting more difficult since they now will hook up a monitor to check the PCM and add another $5 to the cost.

Last year, about 500 miles after having all my bolt ons installed, I had the Y2K inspected. I failed on the dyno. On the 2nd try, the tech worked the system a little and got me to pass. This was only with the bolts on in the sig. Thats why this year ill be interested on if I pass withthe TR224
Im thinking of having it inspected first, and have the cam installed

I just spoke to my mechanic, some shops are already using the plug in emmissions test.

Here in Ohio they are doing the obdII plug in testing. They do check for cats but in my case the car is too low to see. I have longtubes installed, no cats, and use hptuners editing software. They do cycle the key to make sure check engine light works. If you have any stubborn engine codes you can turn them off with edit software. I just had mine tested 4 mos. ago without a hitch, however if you try and reset your computer right before the test, they will find p1000 code meaning the car has not been through a drive cycle(automatic fail) As long as your check engine light is off and there are no stored emmisions codes iv the vcm then youre fine. Kinda funny I dont even have cats but can still get emissions cert. Gotta love technology. Email me if you want details.

I'm interested in this issue as I live in NY State. My car only has LT headers with RT cats and has had no tuning done on it. If I have it tuned will it fail when they plug it in and see that the original computer settings have been altered? What happens if I do heads & cam and the resulting tune? Will my car fail then? It sure would be a waste doing mods only to have it failed......

Before I took all the mods (huge cam, LS6 ported heads, LT's, 3.90's, PT4000, RT cats, etc.) off, I got my 'Vette passed thru Texas' OBDII checking. Texas allows 2 not readies and I had 2, so I was OK. If the other states are similar, you may have no problem with radical mods.

I had my car tuned, did a Blackwing Air Filter and had a 160 degree thermostate installed............I hope I don't have a hard time, I'll find out in March when the inspection is due.
Hey Mike...................Nice Picture

Hey John, Carmen has done my H/C package and headers + tune of course. I just went through NJ emissions via the OBDII connector routine with no problem. I do have both the high flow CATS and sensors on mine. They didn't give me a second look...having said this, they failed me because my headlight bulbs had a blue tinge to them. Of course, they missed the H-4 Euro headlights which aren't DOT approved, you figure.

It's just gonna check for codes. No codes = no problems. Hence the O2 Sims are now the best invention for the modern car EVER!
