How come I only get codes if......
I go manually into the codes by holding the options button & pressing the fuel button 4x)?
They always have an H after them (history) too.
Shouldn't I get a code message in the DIC upon start up if there is a problem? I can't check everyday for codes!!
Ron
No, the dtc (diagnostic trouble codes) can only be retreived by doing the manual procedure that you described or by plugging in a scanner tool. I never check mine unless I've had some type of problem with warnings flashing on the dic, etc. Having H codes is okay. If you had a current trouble code or problem, it would show C and you would want to check that out.
Good luck,
Fix
If you have a current code the car will let you know so you don't need to check them all the time. Once you get an alert you can then pull the codes and see which one is current. After that you need a service manual to figure out how to diagnose the failure. The code only gets you started it is not necessarily a failure callout.

Some DTC will NOT set the CHECK ENGINE light! Usually history codes are only set for a very short time, and then the problem that set the code clears. Low battery will cause a lot of the error codes. As soon as the car starts the alternator takes over and NO CODE!

Yes you can! I do every day!!!
You can do it while you are driving.
If you hit the reset button after codes start displaying it will stop the automatic scrolling thru the codes. Then hit the options button repeatidly and you can skip thru the codes quickly. You can exit the codes quickly and return to normal guage readings by hitting the e/m button
