Has anyone had any issues with their LSx AFR heads? The shop that is doing the work on my car suggested that we have the heads checked out. Here is what the machinist found:
Heads were not flat, off by .005
not all valves were seating perfectly
In addition one of the valve cover retaining bosses was not tapped deep enough for the bolt to go in all of the way. The same problem was encountered with two of the threaded holes on the front of the head that are used to attach the alternator/ps bracket. In all cases the holes were drilled plenty deep but not tapped deep enough. This problem was encountered using stock hardware and bracketry.

I am going to contact Tony at AFR next week to let him know. I think that he is out of town right now. All problems were rectified by the shop (RMCR) and the heads are on the car.
I have been doing this long enough that I expect issues, especially with new products. I was just curious if anyone else had seen anything.

Shouldn't you have let AFR fix the problem under warranty rather than giving the job to an unknown (regardless of his skill) so that AFR could make good and maintain your warranty? AFR could have done all that work themselves without incurring the labor of a third party.
That would have been a valid option. To me it was faster and easier to just take care of it and move on. That is important when your car is torn apart.
I am not trying to bash or cause problems. I am just curious if anyone else had seen any issues.

I didn't have any issues. I checked my valve guides and springs. I took them off and put low pressure springs on to check rocker height with th valve cover on. I did it on both heads. I had my heads shaved .010" so if ther was an out of flat condition that could have cleared that up. The bolt holes were all fine. One issue I had, but it did not relate to the heads directly was with my rocker clearance to the shoulder wall. I put a set of Harland Sharp's in and had to clearance every one of them, but this was due to the HS' being fatter at the pushrod fulcrum and not due to insufficient wall clearance.

I agree. It's not always a good option when your car is apart and taking up space or a lift. I've made those decisions knowing the supplier would have to take my word that there was a problem.
So, unless you got the only set that was ever like that, you need to have your shop document the things they fixed. Not to start a big thing about it, but just to let Tony and them know. Their reputation is flawless, they deserve that consideration. Even though you needed to move on, give them a shot at some sort of remedy. Good luck, keep us posted...
That is exactly what I plan on doing. I just want to let AFR know what we found. I'll cal them on Monday or Tuesday. I need get the details from the shop so I have the complete info before I call.
