Valentine and Passport are the two favorites in the crowd. The Valentine fans love the arrows and it works great. The Passport fans get great results too, possibly less false signals, it's cheaper, but no directional arrows. Either way, you'll be happy.
Good luck and if you want more info., do a search. This topic has been seriously beat to death!

V1 here. But whatever you do, don't even bother looking at anything other then the V1 or the Passport. They are head and shoulders above anything else out there.
On the website,www. Radar Busters.com,"Radar Roy" rates all types of detectors, including the V1 , Passports , & Cobras. They say the PNI Traveler 1 or 2 is very good for a cordless unit esp. for the money.I got one at Walmart for about 130$.I like the cordless feature (don't like cord in the way of the radio) & hope Radar Roy is right about his asessment of its capabilities. He has other recomendations there for good detectors at prices less than V1's ,Passports etc.
Roy is an ex-trouper so he has some good experience at work.I was surprized when he tested radar jammers, including the highly touted Rocky Mountain brand , said they were totaly ineffective.

i did some research, which is a rarity for me!i went to www.radartest.com.i was going to get the valentine for the arrows.then i read up on it and went w/the passport 8500 X50.According to the info, the valentine uses outdated technology and didn't "see"certain radar, while the bel something or other was tops!i got the X50 because it was in the top 3 or 4 and there was a guy on here who was giving forum members a good deal!235 bucks!so,i've had it for 2 or 3 weeks and it's doing fine.360 degree coverage, pop mode if you want it,and the latest technology.all i know is,when there's radar around it beeps!good enough for me!

Be careful in relying on that site as it is run/owned by a consultant who has done a lot of work for Escort.
I have a Valentine that I hard wired into my C5 and I really like the arrow feature after using the Escorts since they first came out in the 70's.
I've gotten two speeding tickets that no detector would have prevented. The first was on I-40 on 9/12 (the day after) for 71 in a temporary 60. A Tennessee trooper was in the median, just behind a rise, I saw his light appear just as his instant on went off and there were no cars ahead of me to give me an early warning. I got written for 11 over even with a Combat Wounded License plate. The next was on I-81 in Virginia by a trooper in an unmarked car, I even had my detector on (illegal in VA) but he wasn't using or had radar. The inconsiderate that hog the left lane and block you from maintaining a reasonable 10 over and you to nail it whenever you have a opening cause all of us a big problem. They act like if 55 is good enough for them, it should be good enough for us.
Any detector is better than no detector when you drive the same route and know what the Local Yokels are using (always on). I thing the Valentine with the arrows is worth the money especially for trips into the unknown, but the instant on will get you when you're the only target on the road.
It was a tough decision for me too. I finally decided on the Valentine 1. Glad I did. The arrows are the answer. They allow you to determine the direction of the threat and also the validity of a threat/false alarm instantly. If it to the side...it is false or no threat...front or back, slow down and keep your eyes open.
Another selling point on the V1; they hold their value. Look on ebay and used ones sell for near the same price as new units. Try that with any other detector.

LOL! Thanks for the tip! I'd forgot about E-bay. Went there, found one that had fourteen minutes left, bid on it and got it for $255!

If you got a V1, version 1.8, you got a steal. If you got a version 1.7, your price is about the going rate. Go to www.valentine1.com , punch in the serial # and it will tell you the version. If you got a 1.7, go to the "upgrade" page and it will tell you the difference between the 1.7 and 1.8.
