Don't waste your time and money with a 3.15 I would suggest that you at least go to a 3.42 rear. And while you're at it install a Torque Converter to boot. If you don't want anything too radical go with a 2800 or 3000 stall converter. You will be amazed at how this setup wakes up your car. I had it done and I can't believe what dog performance you get outta that lame 2.73 setup. Chevrolet should flat out stop installing that gear. Its a crime to put that in a Vette.
Look to spend about 400-600 on a 3.42 (used). Lots of guys are ditching practically brand new rears to go for more radical 3.73 and even 4.10 setups, so they are out there. The Torque converter will run you anywhere from 700-1200 depending on which type/manufacturer you go with and the install... plan on about $1000.00- 1200.00 to complete.
This is by far the best mod for any A4. go for it and enjoy!!

Mercury Mike is totally correct.(May be an exception with Z06 owners with 405 hp). This applies to a 350hp LS1. The 2.73 A4 tops out at around 165 at best. 3.15 rear ends top out at around 170, and 3.42 6 speed 175. We are talking about bone stock. The six speed actually tops out at 175 in 5th gear. Sixth is way to big and 160 mph is all you can get out of 6th gear bone stock. All 6th gear is good for is gas mileage unless you have some serious mods.. I have the 3.15 and would like a 3.42 or better, no need for that kind of top end or any place to use it. I'd rather have the acceleration.... If you are set on 3.15 let me know because I am going to a 3.42 or better...

right now, i am leaning towards the 3.42 or maybe even the 3.73 (i put a 3.73 in my '01 cobra)...(don't hate me for the cobra...i like all kinds of cars)...i want to get more input regarding the change in gas mileage (i visit my mother in a rest home on the coast about once a month-230 mile round trip), and i have to resolve the t/c issue...thanks-i may get in touch later....

My 2001 A4 has the 3.73 rear, and the stock converter. Still getting 27 mpg on the highway and 20-24 on the side streets depending on how heavy my foot is. I went from 2.73 to the 3.42 then the 3.73 should have just done the 3.73 in the first place. Great gear for the A4, I love it.
