i drove a vette with a ripper and i liked it alot, never driven one with a hurst, but i have a breathless myself i like it alot very adjustable and shortest throws, but i believe its the stiffest
I tried all the after market shifters.... the Hurst is on my car. The Ripper is too stiff and requires way more effort to make quick shifts.
Exactly the opposite experience for me. I had a Hurst and it was way too stiff. I went to a Ripper. Liked it a much better. Then shortened it about an inch and a half and like it even better.
I had a F Body that had a Hurst in it. Now I have a Ripper and I think I like it better. Its a smoother shift between 1st & 2nd and 3rd & 4th. The Husrt was alittel noisier but I jsut turned the stereo up
I've owned the Ripper and the Hurst, both are first class well built shifters. I drove the Ripper for about 3 years in my y2k, then decided to try the Hurst when I got my 03. I've now driven the Hurst for about 2 years. My impression is that the Ripper and the Hurst have a very similar feel when the Hurst is equipped with the default springs. If I were to pick one, I would give the nod to the Hurst because of it's adjustability. Shifter feel is a very personnel thing, like women, everyone likes something different soooo the ability to change springs in the Hurst should allow you to find something you like.

I, too, have a ripper on my '04. I removed the stock shifter within 2 weeks of buying this new car. The stock shifter does remind me of rowing.
My Q: Did you remove the shifter to cut it? Did you add new threads?
Why not the Breathless? The Breathless has adjustable springs like the other shifters, but the inclination of their shifter can be adjusted as well. I've heard lots of good things about their shifter....their coilover kits and nonpopup headlights are a totally different matter.
Ripper on mine, a little stiff the first couple hundered miles and took some practice to hit 3rd right, but now that I have it down its great. No rattles at all.
Thanks guys! leaftye I can't get the Breathless because this particular vendor only carries the B&M and Hurst, and as a gift only the exchange would be possible. I just can't believe they sent the wrong one. The almost sent it to Maine as well...
I have had the Ripper, the Hurst AND the KIrban unit all within the last year... They all rattle unless you do the cabscrew mod mentioned in the tech section, and I'd avoid setting the stops real close, since the M6 has its own internal stops.
The Kirban shifted the best of the aftermarket units, but they all blow compared to the Z06 Shifter I just installed.
You know the Hurst does " Rattle " A little But it dont seem to be really bad until you get over 100mph. Now that i have the long tubes on and no cats with stingers Hearing a Rattle is nothing but a fond memory
I have tried and used all available shifters in my C5 and Z06's, and in my opinion, the B&M is the way to go.
In the beginning, years ago, the B&M was among the first available for the C5, but it was very stiff. The hurst was released later and was much easier to shift, so everyone praised it. Well, shortly after the Hurst was released, B&M revised the spring rate in their shifters (because of complaints), and now its the easiest to shift between the two. Shift shortness is the same. Noise is close to the same between the two, but B&M supplies an extra rubber boot that covers the base of the shifter. It does help slightly.
Again, these are only my opinions and thoughts.
Thanks,
The Hurst definitely allows noise through the center opening of the stock rubber surround. I cut a circular piece of rubber and press fit it over the shaft to seal this opening. If the B&M seals this with an included rubber cover, that is a huge advantage in my opinion.
As far as stiffness, I used the softest spring in my Hurst and I think it is perfect.
