Default Why 22 ft-lbs for Oil Filter ?

Does anyone know why they specify 22 ft-lbs as torque for oil filter ? This equates to 2-3 turns after bottoming ! I thought it might be due to expansion/contraction of aluminum block?

I only tighten my filter 3/4 of a turn after the gasket touches the block. Been doing this for 25 years.

Whew! I'm glad I read this thread, because I was worried I would have to crawl on cold concrete to give my self- installed filter a few more turns!

And with a little oil on the gasket before installing it should never be a problem to remove.

Okay, so why do you guys disregard GM's torque for the oil filter? Do you just hand tighten your lug nuts too ? (PS: NEVER add a little oil to lug nuts, my neighbor did and his wheels came loose while driving!)

I always tighten my other oil filters to one full turn.

Just because the service manual says it doens't make it law, the service manual also says to remove the engine you have to remove the entire drive train would you follow that also.

I'm like everyone else, I snug the oil filter and then turn by hand until it won'tturn anymore. I've done this on every vehicle I've owned and then everyone else's vehicle I've changed oil on and never had any leaks

BTW - according to the service manual if you have to remove the rear quarter panel on a FRC then you have to cut the roof panel off, there are many ways to do this without having to throw a roof panel in the trash.

I also go handtight, and have ever since I had to punch holes thru a filter and wrench it off with a bar, and that's after I crushed the crap out of the filter with all the filter tools I know of.

I read years ago that this was to make sure it sealed on possible imperfect block maching on the gasket area.

I do not tighten mine this tight.
