Just got a C5 four months ago. Every time I get gas I smell gas fumes in the car for a short period of time. Is this normal? I never get a fill up. I try and get about 3/4 of a fill. I also get a p0442 dtc code (EVAP small leak) on occasion.
You have a fuel or more likley a vent line leak. I recommend getting the car up on a lift and inspecting the fuel tanke, fuel lines and the filler neck and hoses.. Fumes in the cabin is NOT normal and needs to be looked at and corrected immediately!!
The P0442 code is evidence that you do have a leak! Once you jet the car up in the ail you will get a better idea as to what to look at.
Do you overfill? Does gas spill out when you fill up? I have that problem on another car. When I fill up too much it smells like gas for a while in the cabin. Pump won't click off on my Jeep.
This may sound really stupid but it is the truth!! My 2000 had the same problem. Everytime I was at an idle I would smell gas. I had the car checked out inside and out and on a lift and could find no leaks anywhere. Now heres the crazy part.... The smell was coming from my altenator!!! It turns out the diodes in my altenator were going bad and smelled just like gas.The altenator was working fine though. So I bought a used one off Ebay and no more odor!!! I was sure it was a gas leak of some kind. Mine had no codes unlike yours so who knows. But just for kicks smell the back of your altenator with the car running.
Here are a few pics to give you an idea of what needs to be checked. You have two "saddle-bag" fuel tanks that are connected by a large central tube. The left is the primary with the fuel pump and filler neck. The fuel travels from there to the fuel filter just foward of the left tank on the driver's frame rail.
The driver-side fuel tank and fuel lines
You can see the oblong filter (black on this '98) on the upper left part of this pic.

FYI: A couple of members here have reported leaks after stereo installs where the installer drilled through the rear tub to mount an amp or some accessory and drilled right into one of the tanks.
Every time I get gas I smell gas fumes in the car for a short period of time. Is this normal?
No it is not normal...I had a similar problem with the smell for about three weeks; the odor seemed to be coming from the gas cap. Finally
the in-line fuel filter gasket gave up and a steady stream of gasoline come out of the fuel filter and flowed over the tail pipe to the ground.
Lucky for me, and the car, the tailpipe was not hot.
A new fuel filter stopped the leak. Don't wait three weeks to solve the problem.

I have the same problem on my 04 coupe...gas leak.... The dealer replace the gas tank, interconnecting hose, filler tube and gaskets. This is a common problem on some 04 model.
I have to wonder,,,If you pulled the string on what was really wrong with your fuel system how much of that repair list was really bad???? Sometimes I think they grab as much of the cake as they can and get away with it!!!
On the other hand some dealers go the other route! My 02 Z06 had a bad set of wires. Every month or so I would get a missfire. I would take it in (along with other warrenty repair request) and they would change just that one wire. This went on for three seperate wires!!
I asked them to put a new set of wires on but they would NOT do it!!
I ended up ditching the OEM wires for a set of magnacores. Problem solved!!!

Too many dealers use the "shotgun" approach to fixing problems. Maybe only one item on the list was the cause but GM gets invoiced for all the parts used for the "repair". BTW, I personally have seen several instances where there were no parts replaced at all but the dealer still invoiced GM (and of course the customer was lied to)
pavesi: Keep us posted on what you find on your gas smell problem.

Same thing happened to my 97. As pointed out, the fuel filter is mounted directly above the driver's side exhaust!!!!
I smell gas in my car the night after I eat refried beans or hard boiled eggs. Its really bad sometimes. I found that Gas-X works really well. Just take one about an hour before your commute
