I’m assuming we’re talking longtubes here. Aside from the egr tube which could either be extended or replaced with an 01 up (requires pulling the intake manifold), the dipstick and lower hanger mounts might have to be adjusted. If they’re shorties, forgetaboutit. – C.
Pull the intake? Man I just finished changing over to an LS6 intake. What type of adjustments need made on the Dip tube and Lower mount tabs? Bending or enlarging the holes via die grinder? If I choose to extend the EGR tube, can the extension be clamped or is welding required?
That’s a shame that you already had the manifold off because the hose can’t be removed with it on. To extend it you will have to cut the hose and splice a metal tube in between. If you find the right size tube, it should stay in place with just friction but because it will be longer and heavier, you might have to support it to keep it from bouncing around. Take a look at where it is now and compare it wth the new header to see how much it has to move.
The dipstick mounting changed sometime in 00. I’ve heard that some people who made a header swap weren’t getting true oil level readings because of the different location of the mount. Even getting an 01 dipstick didn’t help and they had to grind it. What I’m going to do when I put my B&B’s on, is take an oil level reading before I start to take things apart and mark (somehow) the dipstick so I can compare the level after I complete the installation. Hopefully, it will be close.
Because of the changes Chevy made to the down pipes through the years the mounting bolt locations will be slightly different. You’ll just have to see when you get there if it affects you and get creative if it does. But that’s where the fun comes in, right? Good luck. – C.
I don’t think that would be a good thing to do because you never know how/if the PCM will be effected. It shouldn’t be that difficult to extend it the four inches or so, but I was a little *** backward in my explanation yesterday so I’ll try again. The egr pipe is aluminum, about ½ inch diameter. It would have to be cut with a fine hacksaw and then extended using a flexible tube if some sort. It will, however, be susceptible to heat so you would have to find the right tubing or insulate it somehow. Good luck. – C.
I understood the extension. I am just trying to keep the mod easily removable. My wife is thinking she wants to go to Law school next year, so the Vette will have to go . I am hoping to install LT's and if I do have to sell the Vette, remove the headers and sell seperate. I think I could get more cash back this way. So if I can extend the tube easily that may be a way to go.
If I decide to get a new air tube. Does the intake need completly removed, of just slid forward a few inches?
From what Century 21 Muscle Cars told me, it has to move forward enough to be able to get a wrench back there, so I guess it dosn't have to be completely removed. You still have to take all the bolts out and maybe the fuel bridge. I'm not sure if that little PITA air tube in the back has to be disconnected. But if it doe's, lots of luck. - C.
