Default Cooling System Quandry

It seems that I have run into a little bit of a hiccup on my Z. I put the car away for winter about two months ago. It has been in the garage the whole time under the cover sleeping away. Then about two weeks ago I was completing some trim molding in my kitchen so I slid some molding under the car for a night because I didn’t feel like putting it in the attic where I store my scrap pieces. Long story short I pulled the molding out from under the car at it had a wet spot on it. Definitly coolant upon inspection. I then opened the hood and can see that it is running down the front of the engine somewhat and hitting the rack. All of my hoses are new and don’t appear to have any problems. Coolant is new @ a 50/50 mix so I doubt it froze and cracked anything.

I haven’t torn it down yet but it looks like it is coming from the water pump area. Has anyone heard of an engine spring a leak that has been sitting for a couple of months for no reason – or a pump failure like that.

I really hope it isn’t a freezing issue – A cracked block will not be fun but maybe an excuse to put some more cubes.

Any thoughts are welcome

Do the basics first; i.e., check all the hose connections to make sure that they are tight. Also, water runs to and from various places so even thought it appears to emanate from the water pump it might be coming from elsewhere.

I just find it kind of weird to have happend after sitting for such a long time, in the cold.

The engine was apart when I put the cam in last spring so hopefully it will just be a failed gasket or hose as you suggested.

Your best bet will be to find a cooling system pressure tester (maybe AutoZone can rent you one) and pressurize the system COLD and HOT. Sometimes temperature makes a difference.

I see this all the time with new hoses installed and cold soaked. All you most likely need to do is go around and retighten all your hose clamps. Good luck
