Default Drilling holes in exhaust

A friend has a 2001 convertable, stock except for a K&N filter. He drilled 4 X 5/16 inch holes in each exhaust pipe at the curve just before the muffler. He liked the new sound and performance, ran for a few weeks, no problems.

I tried the same for my 2000, also stock except for a K&N filter, drilled 1 in each, then 2 and stopped there, as it was loud enough for me.

The car sounds meaner but not too loud, no resonance inside the car at all. Performance seem to be more torque at lower RPMs, but does not seem to get from 5-6K RPMs as easily (not that I care to be honest as I dont often run at 6K on the way to work)

Has anyone else done or thought of this? Does anyone know of any reason why this is a bad idea?

Thanks a lot - first time here and first thread posted.

Welcome to the forum. I am not positive but I think that would have negative effects on your cars performance.

It is like cutouts, with no way to shut it off, so I'd say its ok.

Kind of a ghetto mod if you ask me. And I doubt 4 -5/16 holes will do anything for performance. The increase in TQ is in your head.

c'mon 90droptop, tell us what you're really thinking.

welcome to the forum Florida2000. Keep an eye on the parts for sale section. you can find a good Ti exhaust or another muffler section that will give you sound, weight reduction and better flow without the "ghetto mod" stigma. once again, welcome.

It would have been better to buy an aftermarket exhaust system... then again if you dont have the funds to do that I guess this was the next best thing.

Four 5/16 holes?? in each?? that a total surface area of more than 2 1/2 inches. Can anyone say carbon monoxide poisoning. I can see sitting in traffic and getting a severe headache before nodding off for the last time..
Yeah Cut outs can be turned off when you sitting in traffic. Not a very smart move... Brain damage? This sounds like a NO Brainer to me....meaning you have NO brains

I was thinking the same thing. That space back there leads right in the rear area. I would rather know the exhaust is going outside the car rather than under it.

Sounds like the zip-tie mod equivalent for exhaust

Similar in concept to the "A & A Exhaust Mod". That is -- some portion of the exhaust by-passes the muffler.

I doubt that you've created any significant safety risk. People have been drilling holes in mufflers for decades. However, it is potentially a risk.

If you like it -- great. If you decide you don't like it; weld the holes up.

I've been on this earth for 60 years, and in the automotive arena for over 45 years. I've never seen anyone here on the east coast drill holes in their exhaust pipes..anyone looking for more noise, either removes the mufflers, goes with resonators only or buys a less restrictive muffler.,but always routes the exhaust out from Under the car. In any event, anyone with half a brain would not let leaking exhaust gases get trapped underneith their car. That's why any hole in an exhaust system other than a 1/16th weap hole in the muffler is a failure in a vehicle "safety" inspection.

Too harsh ? Wouldn't be E-T, if you weren't.

The mod sounds like the A&A muffler by-pass mod, but shortcut. I would think that it would make a whistling noise when you nailed it.

If I spoke my mind on some of the things I read on this board, I would be banned for sure.

This was considered:

1) I live in Florida and have the top down 95% of the time. 2) the holes are drilled at the curve and exhaust is forced towards the back of the car and is very near rear anyway 4) I am more likely to get CO poisoning from the car in front of me if I'm sitting in traffic 5) CO carried inside by exhaust fumes is easily detectable, you'd taste and smell it, unlike CO produced by a gas heater in a home for example.

Anyway, it’s been a great experience so far at corvetteforum, the insults and sarcasm are much appreciated
