Default Headers / Cat Back - Is this the right solution

The local speed shop has about got me sold on Kooks LT Headers, a Magnaflow Cat back exhaust system, and a number of dyno runs with tuning. Any thoughts on RWHP gains using this setup? They would like to suggest up to 40 HP gain.

I also installed a K&N 'Tie-wrap mod' setup today. For the cost of the K&N filter and some black tie wraps I'm thinking this is a pretty good setup for the money as well as how well it flows.

If the local speed shop is including an LS1 Edit after the Kooks LT Headers/Magnaflow exhaust system install, then 40rwhp is certainly a reasonable goal. BTW, will you go with or without Cats? Without is another 3-7rwhp gain.

With just the long tubes plus the cat back system you are probably looking at around 30-35rwhp. Get a real intake like a blackwing for 230 bucks and you can bump those gains up to 40-50rwhp after a dyno tune. I have the magnaflows and enjoy the sound and quality. have fun

I was assuming that I would keep the cats in place for inspection purposes. Am I being too conservative?

I'm interested in why you would think the blackwing would spin up more HP than doing the open K&N 'Tie Wrap Mod'?

IMO you need to let the Cats, O2 sensors, and computer do there job and find the extra 5hp somewhere else. Do you really want pollute more than necessary and have your car stink for 5hp? Chances are your computer will not control your lean mixture properly w/o the cats unless someone really knows what they are doing on the tunning anyway...

Agree. With a car as powerful as the C5, do you really miss the 5HP? What about your civic responsibility here? Are'n't we all in this together? No flames please!

I would agree that the 5HP is not worth it.

The basic concept is better airflow. The blackwing and even moreso with the vararam are going to give you a pretty good percentage increase in airflow over the stock box. Even with a k&n filter and the zip ties you are still dealing with the restrictive stock filter. If you want to get the most out of the other mods you are planning on, a good induction system will be crucial. If cost is a big factor, get the blackwing for 230 bucks and install it yourself in 30 minutes. If not, go with the vararam for best hp gains (i wish i had). peace

Have the blackwing and corsas in place - have the Kooks 1 3/4 with cats in the garage awaiting install - we will see on the "before and after."

I would keep the cats unless you have a really compelling reason to get rid of them (like going FI). 40rwhp would be a good guess.
