I hear what you are saying, but have seen no data to back it up. I have asked many times if someone has done an oil analysis that has the Vararam, none yet. I would love to jump on this thing and install it, but won't until I see data on the filter. All the filter studies I have seen to date indicate that oil on foam doesn't filter very well.
I do believe if I'm not mistaken (I was on vararam's website today) they are now using a K&N filter in place of the filter's they used to offer...check it out on there website.

Unless I missed it, I don't believe they are throwing in the K&N filter. They should be, assuming it's a tight fit, without leakage. It would really ramp up perceived quality of the system. Here's the link: http://www.vararam.com/products01.html
All it describes is the improvements to their homebuilt filter.

Hardest part on the install is the foglamps. Did mine by myself in about 2.5 hours, and was ready for a coupla beers by the time I was done.
Didn't have to remove the bumper, never heard of that.
I do treat the filter with K-N's filter oiler tho, since the filter is basically a glorified sponge with some chickenwire behind it.
The car does run a whole lot better with it, especially at 60+.
If anyone knows if a K-N filter is available for the vararam, I'd appreciate a part number or a link. I've looked around and so far had no luck locating one.
You guys are correct that thing they call a "competition filter" is sponge and chicken wire. HERE IS KN FILTER NUMBER: 33-2522
This is actually a filter for a TR-7 but it fits perfect for the Vararam.

I am ordering one for sure, mainly for the quality of the k&n. Does anyone think there is any gain in air flow with the k&n over the stock vararam sponge?
Check out this post for some more VARARAM info and some DETIALED INSTALLATION instructions!!

Yes it does require a little bit of talent to install, however you can make life so much easier by removing the shroud your stock air box is mounted on. Very easy to do and will speed up the install in half the time and eliminate a bunch of skin abrasions. Becareful of your sensors thats all. The instructions don't say to do this, becuase you can install it just the same, but half the time sounds good to me. As far as the filter, you can only buy the improved VR-2B, the 1B had more than on filter. The 2B has an "averaged" filter for a wide range of driving conditions, I am happy with mine and I do not oil it. You can for $50 bucks get their straight drag/competion filter. But I would not suggest for street use. No problems with water ingestion. The standard filter safegards against that. You also have the option to enlarge your water drainage ports by drilling for added security. I did not, because my Z is not a daily driver, if yours is than this is a good idea. The added punch with this system is very noticable and becomes very crisp at higher speeds due to forced air pressure. This is a well engineered system and Kudos to the designer.
