I've heard a lot about this and the CAGS devices to stop it. However, after owning the car a few days, I am not sure I understand the issue. I do see the 1->4 indicator, however, it only seems to come on around 14-17 mph. Who wants to shift out of 1st at those speeds anyway? By the time I want to shift out of first, I am long past the 1->4 business. Perhaps there are other instances where it comes on, but I've never seen it. Seems to be a non-issue at this stage.
It happens mostly just piddlin' around. Then you find you're in just too high a gear to accelerate properly, when you need to. You end up in 4th gear, when 2nd would be a more realistic gear choice. This happened to me in parking lots a few times, until I got the CAGS eliminator dealie.

I thought it only happened in 1st gear. This comes on when in other gears?

No it only happens in 1st gear but I have found that often it is in issue particularly driving in traffic where you are less likely to step on it becuase there are cars in front of you

I know a little something about traffic since I commute in the worst in the country. However, I still don't understand the problem. When the light comes on, you don't thave to shift. It is just saying that if you want to shift, you'll have to go to 4th. My point is why not just stay in 1st?

There are some people who just can't train themselves and repeatedly have problems shifting the car at the wrong time. You can shift to second before the speed gets to 14 or after it gets to 20 or if you get on the throttle a little aggressively. Spend the $20 for an eliminator on some other mod.

Good point. I guess since I am coming from a car with a 9k limit, I am used to changing gears at much higher RPM's!
$20 is a small price to pay to NEVER have to worry about it.
I agree. You shift when you want to shift and into the gear of your chosing. $20 is a small price to pay for that privilege. In addiition I congratulate GM for being innovative enough to spare buyers from the GG tax. Otherwise buyers of the C6 may have had to pay a $1500 GG tax.
If the C6 was my only vehicle, then there would be less of a problem. I have 3 more, plus cycles. So combine the 1-4 skip with "where's the hi-beams?; Where's the wipers?; Where's the other things" etc.
.....And then a child runs out in front of you.
I don't have a lift, so installation will be challenging.
There is another thread from yesterday about installation. Remember the transmission is in the back, not in the middle of the car, so it appears you can drive one wheel up on a curb and get to the wire you need.
The skip-shift isn't a big problem, just a minor annoyance that is cheaply and easily remedied.
The 1-4 shift does not bother me. I always take 1st up a bit. The problem is if you ever let your friends take it for a spin or get it serviced, valet or whatever the rare ocassion someone else has to drive it, it is hard to explain to others what to do. I did not install the device on my C5, but will on my C6.

That’s my problem too. No one in front, I’ll accelerate past 20, no problem. Major Hard A&& is coming out of my development. There is a stop light where I turn left. If there is a car or 2 in front, I get going 15 mph or so then get slammed into 4th while turning. Most of the time, I’ll go to third but what I really want is second. Who designed the CAGS anyway. I can’t believe it saves any MPG. If it does, it has to be insignificant.
10-15 minutes. Just back it up on ramps or jack up the rear a little bit and put it on jack stands. Get underneath and plug in two connectors.
I got a 6 speed because I wanted 6 speeds and I wanted to be able to control what gear the car is in. I don't like knowing that there is any range at which I can't use the transmission properly, regardless of how unlikely it is! And if you have $20 to spend, see how far that gets you with any other mods. You'll pay $500 for a piece of plastic and 1 HP compared to spending what you'd blow on one large pizza to have your transmission work properly for the life of the car!

I am pretty sure it was designed for EPA testing and not real world driving. The savings must be significant enough to help CAFE and avoid a gas-guzzler tax. After buying an M3 and S4, it is nice to get more power without a $1,000 or $1,500 bill from Uncle Sam.

I put it on my '93 and have not on my '97 & '05! I find it a non-issue for me. The only time it is an issue is when iI let some one drive the car and they normally are tentitive in driving the car so it catches them 9 times out of 10!
If you can't 'step on it' leave it in 1st...I drive in traffic every day and never have an issue...if traffic is slowing before I can get through the cags range just leave it in 1st...nothing says you must shift. shrug.
