I notice that if I get out, and open the passenger door soon, it seems to interrupt the passive lock sequence. Maybe there's a good reason for this, I don't know.
Someone else mentioned this in another thread and I tried it with my car. My car does not work this way. If I close the driver's door, I can walk behind the car to the pasenger door, open it for a few seconds, then close it. The car will always lock.

I do have mine programmed to unlock both doors when unlocking. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I have both the passive lock and the FOB reminder turned off.

Just don't like the car being locked in the garage when I don't have the FOB with me. Also, don't like the car locking my passenger in (and arming the alarm) if they opt not to get out when I do. I don't mind locking the car myself. A nice feature I should note is that the car still unlocks automatically when I have the FOB with me and I touch the door pad.

As far as the FOB reminder goes, I view forgetting the FOB in the car the same as leaving my keys in the car (or wallet) and if I'm responsible for locking the car I can't lock it without the FOB. The reason I turned off the reminder is that the car blows the horn when I really have not forgotten the keys in the car. For instance, I get out of the car to fill the gas tank but don't close the door. When I get back in and shut the door it blows the horn... scares the old lady in front of my car out of her wits.

But... I turned off the passive feature on my '98 also.

For the first month had the passive turned off, which required fumbling for the fob in my pocket, and push the lock button while walking away. Started to defeat the whole purpose of the fob, IMHO.

Turned on the passive lock feature, and now love it. I had to "check" that the car locked by waiting for the side marker lights to flash, but now I don't check anymore for the flash... just walk away.

Locking in the garage is no big deal as my fob is just hanging on the wall about 10 feet away. I can always reach up and pop the hatch or manually unlock the car from the fob if I need to get in the car for any purpose.

Be passive... not aggressive.

I have a 4 year old son who rides with me at times. When he rides along, I get out on my side, close my door and walk around to his side to open his door and release his seat belt (he's in a booster seat and cannot reach the seat belt latch himself). After all that, he gets out and I close his door. When I do all this, the passive locking does not seem to work.

So far, the only work around I have found is to leave my door open while taking my son out. Then I close his door and walk back around to the driver's side and close the driver's door. Passive locking works then, but of course, it would just be easier to close the driver's door initially and use the lock button.

Suggestions (other than RTFM) are welcome.

I was involved in an early thread about this situation. I even spent some time in my garage trying to get the car to repeat the problem. I was able to get it happen one time. The thread finally died for lack of effort!
But just last night, I got out of the car, fumbled for a second or two, then walked around and opened the passenger door just after the lights had flashed that the car had locked. I took something out of the glove box and then closed the passenger door and walked away. I hesitated to watch the lights flash and they did not. I walked inside the house and took the fob out of my pocket and went back to the car. UNLOCKED! There must be some sort of delay between lights flashing and lock confirmation that can be upset by the passenger door opening. I generally like the passive lock and use it all the time. I never worry unless there is a passenger or I open the passenger door before walking away.

Sounds exactly like my experience from earlier in this thread, except I wasn't ever able to duplicte it on purpose even once. I just talked to Helm, and the service manuals are suposed to be available in mid March. Perhaps its descriptive sections will confirm your theory.

While changing out my floor mats and wiping the seats with Meguiars Leather Wipes today, I tried opening & closing the passenger door with 2 different time intervals.

First, I got out of the car and closed the driver's door, then went around and opened the passenger's door before the passive lock had the required 8 seconds to lock the car. After leaving the passenger's door open for 10-15 seconds, I closed it. The car locked & flashed the lights about 8 seconds later.

The second time, after I closed the driver's door, I waited until the doors locked and the lights flashed before I opened the passenger's door. After waiting 10-15 seconds, I closed the passenger's door. About 8 seconds later, the lights flashed and the doors locked. I did verify that the doors were locked.

I do have the DIC unlock option set to unlock both doors when the driver with fob opens the driver's door. Mine seems to passively lock the doors no matter what sequence of events occurs with opening & closing the doors.
