From: Heaven, for the climate; Hell, for the company
You guys are absolutely right about those "iconic" cars. They make a car company, and they would be stupid to shut down the Corvette. By the way, can someone direct me to the place where I can order an '06 Thunderbird or Camaro or Firebird or ElDorado or Riviera?
None of those are the same caliber as a Corvette with the possible exception of tbirds, but I really think those fell apart decades ago. Remember the horrible 80s tbirds? While the camaro and trans ams were certainly important pieces of american automotive history and iconic muscle cars in their own rights, they are not corvettes.
Corvettes have had an incredible run from '53 to '05 without a major dip in popularity, quality, performance, and overall likeability. No other single line, not mustangs, camaros, tbirds, devilles, whatever, has had the same success.
All of that coupled with the fact that the C6 is profitable and bringing the company world wide attention mean that corvettes are unlikely to go anywhere.
My buddy is a service writer at a Chevy dealership and also has a sales license. He says the dealer makes more profit on a Corvette than any other GM product sold, including trucks. The Corvette will stay.
I don't think Americans could picture life without Corvettes. It is one of the few constants in our rapidly changing society. There would be rioting in the streets (at least in Bowling Green). And I must agree with the premise that GM is not that stupid. But you always wonder and ponder by having thoughts like "How did the same company that gave us Corvettes also give us Chevettes?"
As stated by others, it would be most unlikely that GM will mess with the sucess of Corvette. However, it's cousin the XLR, might not share the same fate.
They won't get rid of the vette..It's the only sports car they have, but they do need to do major changes in there line-up..Even the vettes $2.50 interior needs to go.
