With the current problems at GM is it possible that they could pull the plug on the C6 ? Lets face it. It may be a high profit vehicle but the production numbers are not high enough to continue R&D spending on a low volume product. It is a niche vehicle and these types of vehicles are often the first to go in a major restructuring of the company.
From: Frankenstein never scared me. Marsupials do, because they're fassst…and they DART, THAT'S crazy!

The Chevrolet Corvette is the most recognizable, and longest running, halo vehicle in the entire American auto industry, arguably, most recognizable in the world. Chevy would probably drop the Cobalt before dropping the Vette.
High volume or low, who cares? The car turns profit. I don't know what their margins are on the vette, but it makes money and a lot of their other cars don't. The C6 is here to stay, and as long as there isn't some very major oil crisis, I see a C7 down the road too.
New Corvettes are at a 7 day supply, that means based on current sales if production stopped today every Corvette would be sold in 7 days. They will not drop this car anytime in the near future . The car is selling and the discounts are drying up right now, $2000 off is a good deal right now on a Convertible
I called dozens of dealers who were at or even 500-1000 ABOVE MSRP on COUPES!!!
I was on the phone all day before I found a dealer willing to go anything below MSRP, I thought I was lucky to get 2500, which I got bumped up to 4k after selling another car for the dealership to a friend and being willing to wait for the production (I ordered mine).

I'll contend GM, the C6 and C7 futures are both very secure. GM will go through typical down-sizing initiatives/steps as most large companies (incl Fed Govt) are doing these days to get their spending/costs in order. Unfortunately, the working class of GM will shoulder the burden of years of over-spending and poor financial decision making by those in leadership positions. There will be a lot of hand ringing, but ultimately the big losers will be the employee, benefit packages, etc. Said situation, but the corvette will live on.
When any car company can sell, an almost guaranteed, 30,000 copies of a model in any given year, I think GM will keep the vette around. Look at the other sports car makers. Hell, my Toyota Supra Turbo is a '98 and Toyota sold LESS Supras in the ENTIRE 93-98 run then GM sells Vettes in 1 year. Amortize the R&D for the Japs. Chevy definitely has a niche and I doubt they'll lose it now.
GM stated at there annual meeting they wanted to keep the niche cars and eliminate vehicles that are really being duplicated with different names. Sounds like Bowling Green and the vette is safe!
As long as they don't do to the Vette what Mazda did to the RX. I'd rather see it gone then turn into that! As a matter of fact, Mazda should have called the new RX a new MX6 or something. Breaks my heart.
I just got back from the factory tour(museum delivery version). My guide stated that export sales of the Corvette are now at 10% of production(an all time high),with a good share of them going to Japan.I got to see the back lot where they store them until loaded-Corvettes as far as the eye could see, with loaded haulers moving out about as fast as they were coming off the line. All employees are working ten hour days trying to keep up with demand.I saw a silver '06 ZO6 parked outside and my did it look fine-hot diggety!

GM management has proven that they are stupid, but not that stupid. The Corvette is one of the few cars that's turning a profit for GM. They've already spent the R&D money for the C6, they're selling every one they can make, and they don't have to offer big discounts and incentives to do it. Not a chance they'll kill this golden goose.
They're putting their new R&D money into the cars and trucks that *aren't* selling. But this is the first year for the C6, so they've got at least 7 more years before they have to field a C7, and since a new model development cycle is typically 3 years, that gives them 4 years of breathing room to try to clean up the mess they've made of their other cars and trucks before they have to start worrying about a new model Corvette.
There are no "sacred cows"...it's all about the bottom line. As long as the 'Vette remains profitable, they'll keep building it. So, get out there and order a C6 if you haven't already!
