The new A6 may indeed have driveability or durability problems, but it really cracks me up to hear current C6 owners talk about this. They bought an entirely new CAR, not just a new tranny. Oh, and the A4 was significantly redesigned for this year so it could have had problems. Come to think of it, some of the early C6's with the A4 had problems where the tranny acted like it was shifting into neutral as they accelerated out of a corner. Last post I saw, the unhappy owner said his dealer admitted the problem, said his tranny was not low on fluid, but said there was no known fix at that time.
My own plan is to drive an A6 as soon as one is available. If I like it, then I'll monitor this board for possible problems. If things look good then I'll order an A6 in January. Everything we do is a gamble but hiding in bed is no fun.
An Automatic Transmission With A Manual Shift Mode, Is Not Brand New. It Is A Lot Of Fun To Use! I Shift Up And Down, When I Want To And I Don't Have To Use A Clutch Peddle
I've Used It On:
'99 GS400
'05 G35
'05 Altima
'05 350Z
Several 3 Series BMWs
What a great American. Not an American made car on the list. Oh well.
In about two months, some of the first evals should be coming in, and we'll know for sure wether it's a Hero or a Zero.
I got to drive the A6 at Cruise In VI last May. The shifts were very quick and precise. There are still some Auto "Smarts" left in it thought. I wanted to see what would happen if I wasn't paying attention and forget to down shift at a stop light. I had the car in 5th and came to a stop like I would at a stop light, but I did not downshift. As I came almost to a complete stop, the gears started dropping from 5th to 2nd. I'm anxiously waiting till I can order my C6 with A6.

Sounds like a winner!
I don't know if I'd want to be one of the very first buyers, but I don't think the A6 will be a disapointment.

I undrerstand the 05 guys getting a little pissed but lets wish all us 06 guys waiting for thier cars good luck with this new tranny.
There are lots of people interested in the A-4 because it is a proven time tested

The old tech a4 is okay if you just want to put in drive & cruise or occasionally put it to the floor & run it through the gears. If you like downshifting & upshifting & playing with gear selection the a4 is next to useless. I've owned an 89 IROC camaro & a 93 anniversary vette both with an a4 cause I was tired of shifting for my daily driver. Both of them felt like I was driving an Impala.I went back to a stick & the fun factor increase was dramatic(although daily driving once again became a chore). So what does one need for a good compromise I ask myself? The answer I come up with( which is what I've been saying for years) is a dialed in auto/smg type tranny that has the best of both worlds. If I'm reading between the lines correctly that is exactly what GM has developed with their dual clutch a6 automatic. The info they put out in the press release said a lot of stuff but left out enough details to keep it somewhat vague till they unload some more of the a4's. This new tranny will have a d mode for smooth auto driving & an s mode for firmer spirited driving. My guess is in s mode & using the paddle shifters this will emulate formula 1 driving somewhat giving the street enthusiast more fun just like gran turisimo4 does on playstation2. Let's face it for street driving(not track) the experience is what were after.Driving with a stick is a blast(all 3 of my cars, c-5 m-5, 996tt, all have sticks) but for a daily driver some kind of paddleshifting auto/smg is the way to go unless you don't mind the tradeoff. My prediction is GM is going to hit this one out of the park with the new a6 & very shortly no one is going to be very interested in a vette with an a4 if they are in the market for a vette with an auto. The only people who will be trumpeting how great they are are the people who own them.Just my humble opinion.
Heavy duty transmission that works. The A-6 is unknown at this time and much more complex and it will be time that determines what this new tranny will be like but an A-6 with 2.56 gears only? Who wants 2.56 gears? At least the 4spd. has the choices of 2.73 or 3.15.
If you want to shift you should just get the 6 spd. manual that come with 3.42 gears to begin with.
fyi: Mercedes has a 7 spd. automatic you might want to check into that and the foreign cars.

The overal gear ratios are lower (multiplication) first four gears with the A-6 & 2.56 rear gear , than the A4 & 3.15..........someone didnt pay atention in school............. you can see i didnt on spelin

I test drove the new SLK55 (it has the 7sp auto) and not only does that car go but the auto trans is excellent. It downshifts and even blips the motor to match engine spped....incredible. It is also a brand new transmission and at least from my experience nearly perfect....here's hoping that GM does as good as job as Daimler/Chrysler.
There will always be something better or improved. It is called innovation. You don't think they will improve the A6 in its second year ? Hang on to your seats while they tweak it even better or fix any problems that come up in the first year. Of course those with the first year A6 will have a dog that no one will want and it will depreciate even worse than the A4. The A4 is robust and nobody has had a problem with it. The A6 is uncharted territory so you take your chances.
Spoken like a true A4 driver, who just saw his resell drop 5k.
A4 driver disputing the almost certain overall performance and unquestionable resale superiority of the A6:
" No thanks! I'll stick with my chubby old girlfriend because she's tried and true! You guys take the young hottie. You're gonna have nothing but trouble, guaranteed!!! (Damn! Wish I had one of those...)"
