Default 2006 Paddle Shift

Some of you may have heard by now that a new option for 2006 for automatics (please don't beat a dead horse on why would you buy an automatic...) is a 6-spead (FINALLY!!!!!!) automatic with paddle-shift mode.

First off... thank goodness GM finally wised up. Second, since we are going from 4 gears to 6 on the automatic... anybody heard of any chance the 0-60 time may improve? I know were talking a tenth of a second at best. The big advancement will be in smoothness of shifting.

By the way... I'm a C5 guy just checking in. What's the 0-60 penalty with the automatic in the C6? Is it the same as the C5... 2 tenths slower than the manual? (4.7 to 4.9 in the C5) Just curious.

Very funny wiseguy, please stop playing around and spreading rumors like that. The A4 4L60E is here to stay and YOU KNOW IT!

No. 2006. Go, to the website, click on coupe under Corvette models and under "Highlights" you will see "available six-speed paddle shift with automatic modes." Click on the hypertext and a window will pop up giving a brief synopsis of the new six-speed auto for 2006.

Also, it is listed as an optional transmission under "standard and optional."

That's a GM misprint. The six speed auto got killed just before the release.

No word on the acceleration times and we won't know for sure until it's tested. As far as GM wising up, yes they did and still behind the times a little as far as paddle shifters, you can get a paddle shifter on a station wagon for crying out loud.

I saw the 6 SPEED paddle shift at Carlisle and listened to Dave Hill give a brief description of it. Dave said that they kept the 6 speed quiet because they had a lot of A4's to sell before September. Harlen Charles drove the car up. The neat thing he said is that it automatically "blips" the throttle just before downshifting

Default Paddle Shift - 2006 Owners Manual

From the 2006 Owners Manual:

While the Manual Paddle Shift gear selection system is active, the transmission will automatically downshift through the gears as the vehicle slows. The transmission will select second gear as the vehicle stops. From a stop, the vehicle will start from and hold second (2) gear unless the driver manually paddle shifts into a different gear or selects DRIVE (D). The driver can select first (1) gear for maximum acceleration from a stop.

When you up-shift or down-shift when using the Manual Paddle Shift Feature while in the SPORT MODE (S) , the current gear will be displayed in the Driver Information (DIC), or the Head-Up Display (HUD), if the vehicle has this feature.

The Manual Paddle Shift system will not allow either an up-shift or a down-shift if the vehicle speed is too fast or too slow, nor will it allow a start from fourth (4) or higher gear

If up-shifting does not occur when needed, the vehicle speed will be limited to protect the engine.

The transmission will also automatically down-shift as the vehicle slows down and comes to a stop.

When the transmission gear does not respond to a shift change, the DIC will show an X over the gear display.

When a requested shift is denied due to the speed restrictions shown, the DIC will momentarily show an X over the gear display and a chime will sound.

If the vehicle has HUD, and the transmission gear does not respond to a shift change, then a chime will sound and the HUD will momentarily show an X over the gear display.

Manual Paddle Shift operation is available for use with Cruise Control
The vehicle speeds required for Manual Paddle Shift up-shifts depend on several vehicle inputs, which will vary the allowed up-shift speed by a few mph (km/h).

• Up-shifts to fourth (4) gear require approximately 22 mph (35 km/h).

• Up-shifts to fifth (5) gear require approximately 28 mph (45 km/h).

• Up-shifts to sixth (6) gear require approximately 41 mph (65 km/h).

To prevent damage to the powertrain, Manual Paddle downshifts to a lower gear cannot be done above certain speeds. The maximum speed allowed for downshifting of gears one (1) through fourth (4) are:

• Into fourth (4) gear over 168 mph (270 km/h)

• Into third (3) gear over 124 mph (200 km/h)

• Into second (2) gear over 81 mph (130 km/h)

• Into first (1) gear over 45 mph (72 km/h).

If the driver does not request an upshift as the engine speed approaches fuel shut off RPM, the engine speed will be limited to protect the engine.

My understanding is that it's 4 speeds forward and two in reverse.

If you look at the paddles, BOTH (right and left) perform the same function, i.e. push either paddle away fromyou and the up shift occurs, pull either towards you and a down shift occurs. This is the same method employed in my wife's MINI Cooper. I was hoping Corvette would take the approcah of the Ferrari and others, whcih use a right side paddle for up shift and the left paddle for a down shift. Does this bother anyone else?
