What is the official term for those two large plastic covers on the engine... you know, the ones that everybody paints to match the exterior of their cars? What is the purpose of these covers? Are they merely ornamental or do they serve a function?
What do the stock covers look like? Since so many people have painted theirs, I can't remember what they look like stock (don't have my car yet). Dark gray I believe... with red lettering perhaps??? Can't remember. Just curious.

black with red lettering. They have no real purpose. Marketing people think the more of an engine you cover up the more reliable people will think it is.

Maybe they make it quieter
I like having them though. If you look at the LS1 Transam and Camaros (at least the ones i have seen) they dont have covers and it looks sloppy. At least thats my opinion.

Thay may also provide some protection for the injectors against dust and foreign objects; but they definately look cool when they match the exterior color, or are carbon fiber.
Actually, they no longer officially call them fuel rail covers. I think they are referred to as shields now. Call Bob @ fichtner chevrolet and ask him, he knows what they are now called. We on the forum however still refer to them as fuel rail covers.
