Default Running Changes vs. Changes @ New Model Year

What determines when Chevy (or any automobile manufacturer) decideds to implement running changes vs. waiting till the new model year? I am not talking about cosmetic or performance changes etc. but changes to address known problems/issues? I'm sure major safety and mechanical stuff are give-in's for running changes but what about all the rest?

Good question. I have owned 2 2006 C6s and the last one has a few minor changes from the first one, although both were built sometime in October. The new one has a more muted turn signal sound and the paddle shifters are now angled more towered the driver. That's all I've noticed so far but I've only had the new one for 1 day. Small changes, but interesting in that there seems to be a progression during the model year's production.

Very good observations.

I would think that during model year changes would result from problems (either cars broke or many customer compliants) or manufacturing issues they are trying to fix or different suppliers - 1 couldn't supply or supply reliably.
I would think a manufacturer would avoid those because it could cause problems selling older versions of cars.

I work for an auto supplier on interior trim. We do our own testing and validation for each of the OEM's. We make constant running changes as needed. No change is "put on hold" for a new model year, it is an ongoing process.
