Default C6 DIC error code resetting

I just ordered a 06 coupe. I've owned 2 C5's since 2001. I've seen a few threads that claim I can't re-set simple error codes that will trigger a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT such as a improperly installed gas cap and that I will need to take my car to the dealer to be reset?

In the C5 all you did was turn the ignition to on, press and hold OPTIONS while at the same time pressing the FUEL button 4 times. Bingo you were in and could see all current and HISTORY (old) codes. To delete them you just pressed the RESET button.

Please tell me this isn't so?

In the C6 you can't even look at the codes via the DIC.

And this is an improvement?

Are there any aftermarket code readers a consumer can buy to read the codes like they have at Auto Zone?

It is one of the few things that is a huge step backwards. Yes, you can get an scan tool that plugs into the OBD2 port to read the codes. Too bad we can't do it for free with our dic.

Buy a cheap OBDII reader for $100 and do it your self.

The code will clear after a certain amount of ignition cycles with the fault not detected

I would be willing to bet there is a way (back door) but we just don't know it yet! Although, I think maybe they changed it because GM wants you to use Onstar (on the base models anyway) to recover your codes that way it's another reason to suscribe to them.

Anyone who mentions this forum in their order will receive a $7 discount! Check it out. The tool works great. It gives you more control over viewing/clearing codes than most models. Plus, it has a nice length cord so that you don't have to spend time with your head underneath your dashboard. Works on 1996 and newer GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and some others. No computer required. This is a self contained unit. It also comes with a handy code booklet to tell you what the codes mean.
