I have 06 z51 6sp and my oil temps seem to run 200 just loafing around and 240 after a 5 mile twisty road run (4-6K) with air temps in the 40's. I would think with the added oil coolers on the z51 pkg these temps would be lower. Do these temps sound normal?
Keep in mind that the engine oil cooler is in the radiator...the engine oil is "cooled" by the engine coolant. The coolant temperature is regulated to 195+ degrees by the engine thermostat. I'm surprised that your oil temperature is only 200 deg once the engine is warmed up to normal temperature. Mine runs about 215 deg around town.
Compare your coolant temperature and oil temperature...it will give you an idea of how much the oil temperature drops across the cooler.

It seems like I have heard the Z06 uses an external cooler (ambient air cooling the engine oil). If his oil temp is running 150 deg, the cooler can't be in the radiator.

I also noticed the z06 also runs a much higher oil pressure.
Std. "vs" Z51 "vs" Z06...is comparing apples, pears and oranges when it comes to oil. Z06 has a totally different system with more oil being used, it should have lower oil temp. (driving being the same) ...then of course you have the Z51 w/cooler, std C6 w/o cooler..
You suspect right. xW-30 weight oil at that temperature acts about like xW-60 weight oil at normal operating temperatures. Not to mention that it isn't getting hot enough to remove moisture very well.
Coolant =196
Oil=214
This is normal driving around town and on the freeway...
This is what my Z51 runs 90% of the time (typical street use). Sometimes the coolant will get up to 205, but most often runs a few degrees under 200. Oil temp is 214 most often, never yet saw it above 217... then again I haven't yet run the car extremely hard.
As someone here at the forum pointed out once, it is good for the oil temperature to rise above the boiling point of water (212 F) in order to burn off condensation and other contaminants in the oil. 214 degrees F is probably a perfect normal oil operating temperature for street use.
