I'm driving home tonight in the Vette and there is a strange tire noise, like there is a rock or something stuck in the tire. Then, I hear a loud bang from the left front wheel well. Thirty seconds later the DIC reports the left front tire is low. The system says 16 pounds the first time I check and by the time I get home 3 minutes later and I look at the tire, I find the hole from the hiss. It appears that a screw was ejected from there, as the hole left behind is only a 1/16" or less but obviously leaking air. Within a minute, the DIC reads 0 PSI. The hole is in the very middle of the tread in a groove. It is round and not really ripped, as you can see in the picture.
Details: 2005 Coupe Z51, front left tire, approx 4400 miles on original tires.
I am three weeks and three days beyond the one-year road hazard warranty from Goodyear. I called my local G/Y dealer, who I trust for most anything, and he suggests calling my original dealer to see if they can get this covered by Goodyear. The tire can probably be patched, but I wonder how well that works.
Does anyone have experience at patching the EMT tires in this area with a small round hole, and have you ever heard of anyone getting a slight extension to the road hazard warranty from Goodyear?
Hit something in the road ONE DAY after my 1-year warranty and GoodYear would not replace it free. I did get about 20% off on the purchase of the new tire.
These tires are really soft and just sort of suck anything up that they touch, I think. I had a flat and had a staple and a screw in the tire. I think I pretty much swept the hardware store parking lot clean while I was there!
had emt z51 patched in september. As long as an approved mushroom patch is used tire is as good as new even keeps its speed rating
I had a Z51 left rear patched the same way at 13k miles and the tires are now at 23k. The patch has held up fine, but it about time for a new set of tires. Bill

Just out of curiosity, why would you expect Goodyear to replace it free when it was not the fault of the tire? If you hit something in the road and it damaged anything other than the tire, would you expect it to be replaced for free? This always amazes me...

Read the warranty and see all the unexpected benefits of owning GY EMT tires!
Discount Tire has mushroom patched GY EMT's for me at least 3-4 times and no problems, ever, including one I now have in my '06 C6 supercar EMT's since 400 miles.
My flat looked just like yours and it was patched with no additional problems. The dealer did it for no charge and didn't ask the age of the car. Good luck.

Imagine not having RunFlats on this car...if you can.

Read the warranty. It's a road hazard warranty. Do you know what that means? Respond when you figure out what that expression means.
I don't expect GoodYear to replace anything other than the tire. They did replace one tire when I got a puncture from a screw. The puncture was too close to the sidewall to hold. GoodYear replaced the tire. Fortunately for me, they know what the word road hazard means.
Thanks, all for the helpful responses. Sounds like a properly applied patch will do the trick. I will give it a try. My G/Y is approved to do the run-flats, so they should have the right patch.

When you buy a tire with a warranty you are paying for it so why not use it? GY says they will replace the damaged tire so why not.
Last time i looked, the GY warranty says they will replace the tire only if it can't be repaired.
Also last time i looked, GY specifically said in their EMT repair manual that the tire retains it's speed rating if only one patch is done. More than one patch, no speed rating.

It's not free. It's built into the price of the tire.
10k miles and 2 flats so far. Fixed one just last week (picked up a nail), at the Goodyear store, they patched it for $31.20. Stop worrying about the dough!

At this point, I'd just have it plugged.
I agree with plugging it also. I have plugged tires for the past 35 years and to date, knock on wood never had one fail. These patches that they are pushing nowadays is just another way to get another couple of dollars out of your wallet.
