I have a BMW 540 with those sonic sensors built into both the front and back bumpers. When they are temporarily invoked (by either pushing a button or by shifting into reverse) and you get within three feet of anything the speakers on the appropriate end of the car start to beep, and they beep more rapidly until you reach one foot, at which time the speaker makes a steady tone. It really works perfectly, even for skinny poles or whatever.
