Now I'm looking for a 'portable' Nav unit that I could move between my C5 and WRX that has the same format/display/POIs etc. with a decent size screen.
I am waiting for the TomTom 910 unit that is just coming on the market in April. It is completely portable, has all the maps of North America and most of Europe on board its 20MB drive. You can sync it up with your PC to download POIs etc and upgrade firmware when needed.
I have experience with the TomTom 700 and it was great. I had borrwed it from a freind for a week. The new one has a 4" screen and mounts with a suction cup arrangement easily. They have a great website. Check it out.
They have not announced a price yet but I would assume something over $750. It is worth every penny IMHO.
Yup, the Lowrance is a good unit too. Lacks the newest Sirf chipset and maps of Europe but otherwise for North America it does the job. It can be had for $700 as well.
I just got the Garmin. I like it because it is small. Remember, you do not have to look at it while driving. I found in the vette it mounts with the suction cup tucked up high to the right of the rear view mirror. In our Lexus I mount it low and in the middle of the windshield. I found the best price was COSTCO on-line and it was delivered in 3 days.

You may want to check Costco as I think there is an in-store special with Magellans Roadmate 360 for $449.99. I bought one and ordered an portable dash stand (no need to use the windshield mount) directly from Magellan for $50. Just plug in ang go! Easy to remove and put out of sight!
Good luck!
3/27 Just went on sale at Costco.com for $399.99, not sure if you can get the same price at one of their stores. Like the Roadmate 700 this can be upgraded on line.
Just purchased the Garmin i5...which is top rated by CNET. This is a great little unit that is easily transferable between cars. Comes preloaded with all maps, so there is no downloading. Voice prompts give you turn by turn. Can be used with two AA batteries or cord.
Paid only $358 at Walmart.com
Bought my father the Garmin C330, which is also a great GPS. Similar features as the i5, except a bit larger is size. Other difference is that the C330 has a touch screen for entering the route info and the i5 has a scroll wheel enter button. It's not really much of a difference. The touch screen may be a bit faster for entering, but is shouldn't be a dertermining factor. Paid $589 for the C330 at Walmart.com during X-mas.
I have the Garmin C330 and love it. What I really like is it has a 4-hour battery installed in it. When I'm going to make short trips I just sit it on the dash and run it on battery--no need to use the suction cup mount or plug.
I've looked at quite a few of the ones mentioned. I was looking for a screen no smaller than the Lowrance and the same format/info as the C6 unit if anyone knows of one.

Anyone know of one that would fill the bill?
Thanks
The portable GPS is exactly the reason I dont want one in my C6. Of all of the technology in the C6, the NAV will be antiquated the quickest. I feel that this time next year the '06 C6 NAV will look ancient compared to something that a high school kid will probably have on his I-POD. NO NAV FOR ME!
The Lowrance is the best unit out there. 5.5 inch touch screen, superior 3D graphics, really simple to use. You can download additional POI's directly from Lowrance's web site. I would suggest that you make sure that your unit has the lastest map software (03-05) which has only been out a couple of months. If you have to update the DVD will cost you another $80 and will require a computer with a DVD capable of reading a DVD+R in order to download it.(They don't tell you that it is a DVD+R). I've had my Iway 500C for over a year and find that it is better than most OEM units.
I've had four Garmins and find their maps superior to the Corvette Nav Unit. Their latest, the 2730, (http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2730/) has an XM interface that digitally inputs into the guidance, warns of traffic conditions and accidents, and automatically offers detours to avoid them. I used similar technology in France last winter and found it to be far superior to units without this capability. I avoided several accidents and jams, arriving at my destinations without substantial delay.
The downside of the Garmin is that it's significantly larger than some of its competitors like Tom-Tom and Lowrance. Garmin does have a small unit that is competitive with the foregoing, however.
The bottom line is that I'd take the Garmin with XM traffic avoidance.
I bought the Garmin c330 and love it. My wife really isn't computer literate but has little trouble with this. My sister-in-law bought her husband a Magellan 700 for Christmas. He didn't like it, took it back to Costco and got a Garmin like mine. He likes it better. BTW, I received an email from Garmin last week and they have a new software update for the c330. Easy download. Just plug USB cable from unit to PC and run program on Garmin site. It automatically checks unit and downloads without even having to turn unit on.
I've been using the Garmin Nuvi. IMHO it blows away the factory NAV. So much so, I'm inclined to use it in the C6 and forget using the factory unit. It's small and compact, yet extremely easy to read and to use. It's great for traveling...easy in and out of rental cars.
Another alternative to the Garmin 2730 is the Garmin 2720 with the additional GTM-10 or GTM-11 radio antenna. The difference between the 2730 and the 2720 as I described is that with the 2720 you don't get the XM radio service (music, sports, etc.) and the weather service, just the traffic notifications/re-routing capability as previously described.
