While watching Le Mans today on the Speed Channel they had an in car camera in one of the Corvettes. The most noticeable feature was the truly sequential transmission. These type of transmissions have been around a long time in racing and now are in some cars like BMW's as an option. How many people would like to see such a transmission in a C6/C7 and how much would you be willing to pay for it?
Please note this transmission is not an automatic with a manual shift valve body and torque converter.
I have some experience in costs associated with road racing cars and I would estimate that gearbox would cost in the $20K range.
Can't be all that great an adder since on a 6 series BMW it is a 0 cost option. You can have a regular manual shift, the sequential gearbox or an auto for the same price. Granted these cars are in the 70k range but I doubt if BMW would throw in for free a much more costly to produce transmission.
Right, and it is the lack of a torque converter that makes it unpleasant to drive in ordinary driving. During hard charging competition, the banging of those automatic clutches is tolerable, but driving around town, in traffic, it becomes mighty unpleasant mighty fast not being able to control clutch engagement manually, or to have the drive shocks absorbed by a torque converter. That, IMHO, is the primary reason you don't see this type of transmission in street cars.
- test drove a M3 with SMG and never could get a smooth upshift in "normal" traffic. When hammered, it was a different story

I feel the best tranny unit out there bar none is the Audi DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox)...makes the SMGs feel archaic in comparison AND the DSG is already being fitted to the high out put engines Audi makes...I am a gear clanker from WAY back and love shifting but if the Corvette had a DSG option I would select that without hesitation...
Agreed if I had to get an Auto...I test drove the A3 Turbo which has the DSG in it. When it's engaged you hardly notice it shifting. OTOH, I hated not have the control of the clutch, and you can see where my purchasing dollars ultimately ended up!
Reading thru the posts on this forum Auto vs. Manual, I think the auto camp is probably right, for most drivers on a track the Auto is probably faster, but I bought the manual because it's more *FUN*!
