While watching Le Mans today on the Speed Channel they had an in car camera in one of the Corvettes. The most noticeable feature was the truly sequential transmission. These type of transmissions have been around a long time in racing and now are in some cars like BMW's as an option. How many people would like to see such a transmission in a C6/C7 and how much would you be willing to pay for it?
Please note this transmission is not an automatic with a manual shift valve body and torque converter.

Right, and it is the lack of a torque converter that makes it unpleasant to drive in ordinary driving. During hard charging competition, the banging of those automatic clutches is tolerable, but driving around town, in traffic, it becomes mighty unpleasant mighty fast not being able to control clutch engagement manually, or to have the drive shocks absorbed by a torque converter. That, IMHO, is the primary reason you don't see this type of transmission in street cars.
I would really like a true SMG (not a shiftable automatic). Yeah, I'd pay for it. Prolly would have opted for a Z06 if it had an SMG.
I would have ordered a Z06 if they offered an automatic, With the sequential you still gotta shift albeit straight forward or backward. These cars offer the best of both worlds(performance/luxury) and I use more of the luxury side than performance.

When I was test driving a 6 series BMW the low speed shifts were just fine. They use the electronics to control the throttle and clutch engagement speed. You are right about the race type transmissions. I have driven several race cars with Lenco's and Liberty transmissions and they are kind of rough at low speeds.

As I recall it was about a $3K option in the Beemer...
Depends on the model. The 550i for instance offers both the auto and SMG as N/C options. I have no personal experince with these, but have heard that they are a bit(for lack of a better word) clunky driving around town or in traffic.
I feel the best tranny unit out there bar none is the Audi DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox)...makes the SMGs feel archaic in comparison AND the DSG is already being fitted to the high out put engines Audi makes...I am a gear clanker from WAY back and love shifting but if the Corvette had a DSG option I would select that without hesitation...
I recall seeing a thread someplace about GM patents for a planetary transmission without a torque converter. Instead it used a friction clutch and internal clutch packs for gear to gear changes.
I have an M3 with the SMG and I am not impressed at all. For one thing, there are too many shifting "modes". Another thing it that the car shifts kinda lazy up or down. I can shift down, and sometimes the car gets "confused" and doesnt shift when I tell it to, thus sometimes making me go into certain points in curves in the wrong gear/RPM. I just dont like it at all.
Driving the SMG M3 gets boring. I used to have an automatic in another car that I manually shifted and to be honest that shifted faster than the M3 SMG system.
imo, I simply enjoy shifting a pure manual too much.
I realize that the F1 guys use the sequential due to the fact that its fractions of seconds faster than manual shifting, and I am sure that is important while racing for real money. So, in a streetable Vette, there is no way that anyone will relatively notice that fraction. If you think that you do, then you are kidding yourself.

I agree about your M3 SMG assessment, but didn't drive it enough to get bored.
Shifting is fun, and that will soon be the only reason to have or use it. These new fangled auto trannies will eliminate 'performance' as a reason to manually shift.
