Just posting some quick info here as well...this is the Flying Top problem. Hopefully newer cars have the fix already in place.

When I was in the market for a car I went out and drove both the C5 and the C6. I decided on a 2004 C5. Yes, the C6 is a better car but for me it was not $15k-$20K better. I will probably sell my 2004 in a few years and pick up a C6 when I can get a good deal on a used one.

You really have to go out and drive both of them and decide for yourself if the C6 is worth the money to YOU. Basically thats all it comes down to...money.

My .02. I owned a C5 Coupe for 8 years and loved every minute of it. Time came when I wanted something new so I finally bought a C6.

Here is what I think:

Beauty - they are both beautiful cars. Each has it's own artistic advantages, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Faster? some are, some aren't. My C5 was much quicker, but then It had some help from Lingenfelter

Comfort - No comparison - C6 wins hands down.

Handling - My C6 is way better than the C5 - but I have the Z51 option and the C5 was base.

Refinement - The C6, IMO, is the next evolutionary step in the product.

So you buy what you want. At the end of the day, you will still have a Corvette and a great car that will bring, as one CF member likes to say, "Miles of Smiles" , enjoy!

Default I Drove Both C5 and C6

I drove a 2005 C6 auto with fairly nice amount of options 10,000 miles and priced right at 40,000,, I don't think it had the Z51 package. But was nice had heads up and a bunch of other stuff I really don't care about. Anyway It was very responsive drove excellent,, was IMO quieter, less road noise inside than the C5. The C6 was extremely responsive and seemed to run like a BAT OUT OF HELL. I punched it at 30mph on dry pavement and the tires were going to go up in smoke. I was like HOLY CANOLA OIL,,, LOL it made my old 67 feel like a dog. Anyway then we drove a 1998 C5 Coupe Auto with 23,000 miles and 23,500 dollars and it was nice too but had more interior noise, a small amount of wind noise in the driver side windo and the seat was well wore. Anyway it drove nice was fast,, I don't think it had quite the spunk of the C6 but was plenty fast for us. It had a little bit of a rough idle as it would shimmy while sitting still. It drove good but didn't feel quite as good as the C6. Everything felt so tight in the C6. Anyway if we could get the small wind whistle fixed and a new seat ,, it (C5) would be a nice car,, we would also have to put some sound deadening in it as I like a quiet ride with HELL, FIRE , and some Damnation under the Right foot. LOL I don't know what to do ,, My wife and I talked for 2 hours about it and the only thing we came up with was the C5 was a hell of a lot more affordable for us, but we both liked the C6 better. Both of them were nice however.

Went through the same thing when I was ready to buy. I really wanted the 2003 anniversary C5, but some folks are real proud of those cars. I drove both the C5 and C6 and have to agree with other members the C6 is a great improvement. I could have bought a 2004 Z06 for $2K less than the C6 I finally ended up with, the Z felt every bit as strong as the C6. However, I never liked how the C5 Z06 looked with the back glass it had. As far as looks, put a C5 and C6 side by side and you will see all the changes. Personally I think the C6 is drop dead beautiful with its lines and exposed headlights, the C6 looks cleaner and more refined. Regardless of what you decide, I also agree with the other on getting the manual trans versus the auto......way more fun to drive. On a side note, there are tons of accessories for the C5, C6 stuff is coming but no where near what is available for the C5. Best of luck on your new ride

You only live once John, you love that power, get the C6.

No John, you've lived your whole life conservatively. At 33 you mustn't stray now.

You see where I'm going with this? You know what you want. Do it!

1. As already stated, C6 is faster.
2. Matter of opinion which looks better.
3. C6 rides better, squeaks and rattles much less, and does not leak.
4. C5 has more storage space, the big cubby hole in the center of the hatch is missed in my C6.
5. If you drive your C6 at night, you can actually see. Headlights are awesome!!! Of course, you can replace the bulbs in a C5.
My $.02
Well said Possessed! I too have a C5 and C6 and your $.02 were right on the money!

Default Trigger Happy

Oh man ,, I'm trigger happy,, I want to pull the trigger on the C6 so bad that if anyone sneezes the guns going off. I wish I had more of a down payment though. Interest rates suck right now,,, 7 percent is what I have been told.... this would put my payment at almost 650 a month,,, yikes,, .. Well I'm going to think on it awhile ,,,, the car I have scoped out has already been in the shop for a Rear end, left front light wiring harness, a bad air pressure sensor, and some failed Emissions sensor thing. I had a friend of mine look this up at my local dealer,, I finally found a dealer that was straight forward enought to show me the warranty work log. Anyway,, I will see what happens.

If you sold the '67 that should give you a huge down payment? Right??

Sorry to hear you sold your mid-year. Must have been a tough decision. I sold my '67 vert some time back and have regretted it on and off to this day. If you can, I'd wait and pick up an '06 or an '07. 2005 is o.k. but there have been some refinements, as always. Besides, if your '67 was in good shape, you should be able to pay cash.

I have owned a 2000 and 2002 and for the last two weeks a 2007.
The 2007 is a more advanced car and an improvement in many respects over the C5. I would not suggest buying a C5 over a C6 unless you can't financially afford to buy the C6.
I have only had the C6 for two weeks and have just passed 500 miles. I have not yet used the paddle shifters or had any problems what so ever.
I find the automatic ignition, door fob to be an irritant when I have the fob in my pocket and am working around the car, such as loading and unloading the trunk with stuff. It locks and unlocks the system too quickly. I believe I would prefer a manually functioning fob instead of the automatic.

ralph,

It is easy to program your car to lock and unlock manually. See the owners manual. I don't like the auto function either, so just used the DIC and manual to make it manual.

Default Down Payments and What not

Well some questions were had about a down payment from my 67. I used most of my equity on the 67 to pay off a loan on a Suburban and Heat / A/c unit on my house, and more was used to pay off the remainder of the loan on the vette. That only gives me 5500, dollars to put down. I guess I have been living slightly above my means. Anyway the 67 was a good car but was not a numbers matching vehicle so it only brought 35,000. So I guess I will need to wait a while on the C6,, I have found a few 2005's for under 40,000 that have auto's like I would want. But even at 40,000 the payments are still up around 650. I wish I could find some cheaper financing than 7%

Well don't go for a lower model with higher miles...

But if all were equal, which they are not, the C6 is a better car. Much smoother, quite, love the steering wheel (06). I have the A6 and could take the A4 just the same, not a big deal there...

Do yourself a huge favor and drive them both... Then decide. The C6 is far better, that's why its the sixth generation...

Greetings John,

Good luck in your search. I traded my '97 Coupe for a 2005 Coupe and haven't looked back. Here is a link to a review I wrote after 3 days of ownership.
