I'd also go with the TomTom. They've always been good at being easy to understand, plus the new ONE has a lot of the stuff the expensive models have at a lower price. Also, I hear that TeleAtlas, the guys that do their maps, is starting a new map development feature where customers can provide feedback to make the map better and even more up to date.
For me a portable system must be able to accept a route download from a home computer. I believe the Garmin Street Pilot 2820 is the cheapest Garmin unit that allows this. This allows you to create your own "scenic" routes on your computer (not just point to point routes) and then download that route to the GPS unit.

The Lowrance has a $100 rebate offer until end of Sept.
That brings the price down to $460
The other units are relatively more expensive.
you can find the TomTom ONE for under $450 on amazon if you are looking to save money by getting one of the best units at a lower cost, plus it still has the turn-by-turn voice instructions that makes the tomtoms a little be better than the other gps devices.
another vote for Garmin Nuvi 350.
just fantastic, and fits in my shirt pocket, runs on it's own battery power for about 4 hours. Does everything I'd want it to do. Really couldn't ask for more. I paid $585, shipping included. So if you're paying more than that, keep looking on the web -you'll see prices continue to drop as the newer units (with unnecessary bells and whistles that you don't need) come out.
I have a cupholder mount for mine.
see the last page of this post to see my pics.
Garmin C340 here. Software almost the same as the Nuvi, built in battery, 2d or 3d view, tells you what street is coming etc. Garmin is always updating their firmware, you can install automatic updates on your computer.
Stay away from Tom Tom 910. Read epinions on the 910 and you won't want one.
I picked one up before I read them and now I am trying to get my money back. Had trouble with it losing power, freezes up and now it wont even come on.
Picked the Garmin Nuvi 350. Used it in Asheville NC several weeks ago, and last weekend in Mountain Lake, VA, it worked perfectly, no problems. I like the size, easy to update and very easy to use while driving. Easy to setup and enter address's. Works for me.
