Looking at a Nav system, the Lowrance iWay 500c or the Garmin Nuvi 350. Anyone with experience with either system, your input please. Price, accuracy, size, moving from car to car, outdoor use, etc.?
I have a Garmin C330 and I love it! But if I had a chance I'd move to the NUVI 350/360. Same great unit but smaller and lighter makes it easier to carry in your pocket and to switch from car to car.
I've had some experience with both the 330 and the Nuvi 350. Both great little units and perform practically the same. The portability of the Nuvi is excellent and if you don't mind spending the extra bucks it is worth it.
Nuvi 350 (now the 360) is my favorite of all time. For the ease of use, accuracy, features and portability, it is amazing. You can use it in the car, or set it in pedestrian mode and use it walking around. The Iway 500c does have a bigger screen, but is nowhere near as portable.
If you like the 350, you may want to wait a month or so. There is a new 660 coming out that is basically a widescreen 350.
Ditto on the Nuvi 350. I've got one and love it. IMHO much more user friendly than the one in my 05 Coupe. Super portable...I never travel without it in my briefcase. The 360 has Bluetooth and the new 660 widescreen looks like it will be even nicer.
Another happy C330 owner here. It is a very compact unit. The Nuvi is smaller, but not really worth the extra$ unless you plan to do a lot of walking around with it and need language translation.
We did extensive research on portable GPS systems before getting a Garmin Nuvi 350 for my son's Honda CRV. My wife has has GPS ssytems in her two Acura TLs and I have the factory nav system in my 2006 C6 (and my BMW before that) so we're very familiar with nav systems. In addition to looking at specs and prices of competing GPS systems, I read extensive user comments. On almost all of the systems (Lowrance, Garmin, Magellan) it seemed like half the user comments were glowing and half were awful. But not on the Nuvi 350 which was a new model at the time. We leaned toward the Garmin 330 which cost roughly half what the 350 did but several users commented that the display was hard to see in bright sunlight. We got the Nuvi 350 early this year and have used it extensively all up and down the East Coast. Without reservation, an excellent system. Easy to see when you're driving, easy to program/use. Easier to use than the factory system in my 'vette. It has internal battery power so you can program it in your home if you want, then carry it out to the car to use.
I don't know about Garmin's successor models to the Nuvi, but the 350 is an all-around excellent system.
I have been considering buying an extra portable for my Tracker. I am lost without my nav during the winter in Germany. Do these uits work world wide, I noticed someone even said translation, what languages does it have and does it act as a regular language translater? Also can I use one of these while walking around the streets?
RAP, check the Garmin web site for the details on each unit and what they do. I think they have Nuvi units specific for Europe and North America. Sounds like the Nuvi may be what you are looking for if you want something you can drop in your shirt pocket and use walking around cities (assuming you can get a signal between buildings). I almost bought that unit myself, but eventually decided the C330 would be a better deal for me since I only plan to use it in vehicles.

The TomTom 910 comes with both US and Europe Maps included.

I own and use the Nuvi 350 and I say you can't go wrong with this unit. I've used many different GPS receivers and my Nuvi is at the top of the list. It is user friendly, easy to carry, and does a great job getting you where you want to go.

I have the Nuvi 350. I travel for work, and it has yet to let me down. Well worth the $$$
Go check one out at Radio Shack. Plus they have a good return policy.
Some reasons I like it.
Satellite acquisition in less than 5 seconds
Both 3d and top down displays
bluetooth traffic updates (dials out over your phone data connection to get traffic and weather reports - not all cities yet)
blue tooth phone answering, etc
Super fast and easy to operate.
Oh and the voice system can read all the street names. Its cool. Check out tomtom.com
And I dont work for them.
Oh one more thing- even Wall Street Journal had a write up on how all the major GPS companies are falling over themselves to copy the innovation of the TomTom. Its amazing how a small private company is turning the market upside down.
The Garmin Nuvi is great. The 350 model is coming down in price because the 360 is now out. The 360 has has a lot of stuff that is really not necessary. We had a good discusssion this week on this forum about how to mount the Nuvi in a C6. You might do a search on "Nuvi". The Nuvi is so easy to operate that I barely looked at the startup literature, very intuitive and easy to operate.
One more comment, the Nuvi 350 is so small you can detach it and put it in your pocket when you park your car. Despite the small size it has a great screen.
