Default Anyone actually like the skip shift feature?

Call me silly, but I actually like the skip shift feature. Yes, yes, almost everybody else hates it. Fine. I'd like to hear if anyone else LIKES it, and why?

When I drive in packed urban areas, I find myself accelerating very slowly lest I hit the pack of cars in front of me. I find that even without the skip shift I am shifting from 1st to 4th anyway. Seems to give a smoother ride, less shifting, and better gas mileage.

Now, when I'm driving like I stole it, its a whole different matter. I've never had the skip shift feature interfere with my Nascar aspirations...

NASCAR aspirations?
Like a solid-beam rear axle, a carburetor, and only a four speed transmission?

Yes, I love it because it removes the Gas Guzzler tax from the sticker and it is easily bypassed ....

You'll like it until some cell phone yakking bitch behind you runs into your car because of your "unplanned" change in acceleration rate. Oh,I almost forgot, she was farding too. That's important!

If you are accelerating with any gusto at all, you will never experience the "joy" of skip shift

I removed the CAGS the 2nd day I had the car. I'll shift from 1st to 4th if I want to... but not because the car wants me to.

I actually feel that going from 1st to 4th is too big of a jump. You need to either wind up 1st gear "too high" in order to drop into 4th with adequate rpm, or you may lug... overall not good for the drivetrain unless you are REALLY just creeping along at a snail's pace on a dead level surface or downhill.

And as others have stated, IF you needed to take off fast for some reason at the point when CAGS kicks in, the CAGS will only serve to provide you with just enough delay to possibly keep you from leaping out of harm's way.

I find that shifting from 1st to 3rd etc, or shifting from 1st, 2nd and then to 4th etc works out just fine and I do it often. 1st to 4th though...

Goodbye guzzler tax, hello $20 CAGS eliminator kit... GM did it right!

Yup, and that's part of my point. The skip shift only activates at very low speed - when I am driving, shall we say, "spiritedly", it never is a problem. I can do 40mph on 1st!! But the problem is that most of the time, in traffic, this is not practical or safe. I have to do the Lemming Dance behind the suv's and minivans. I find I can maintain a constant rate of (slow) acceleration by a sedate 1st gear followed by a 4th.

In any case, anyone actually LIKE it? (original post question?)

The only ones who think they like CAGS are the ones who live in a boy racer dream. They drive their cars as if entered in some sort of race. They think quite highly of their own driving skills, and to admit that the CAGS causes them any concern whatsoever is to admit that they may be 2nd rate or 2nd place racers. They have 'never' missed a shift in their lives.

CAGS eliminators = lesser men

It saved you a $3,000.00 gas guzzler tax, so you ought to love it. A 50 cent Radio Shack resistor is all you need, so it's really a $2999.50 saving. Still not a bad deal.

I'll bet the companies selling 20 and 30 dollar "modules" with nothing more than a resistor inside love CAGS, they've made a fortune from it.

Do a search on installuniversity Radio Shack mod for the straight poop.
Radio Shack even got in on the profit. They used to be 4 for .99, recently went to 50 cents apiece. Still beats 3 grand. Those Viper folks love to just throw the money away. Check out a Viper MSRP window sticker some day, they get the gas guzzler and luxury tax.

I can't say I like it, but it doesn't bother me--certainly not enough to get the eliminator connector. In slow, around town traffic I would shortshift 1-3 anyway, and with 400+ pound feet of torque, 1-4 is almost as good. If I don't want it to happen, I just go up to third when I feel the push-over. That handles 99% of the situations. Besides, 95% of the time it's not an issue. I bought a 6 speed to drive it.

CAGS is great for city driving, it makes your 6 speed into a 2 speed, and that is fine for traffic. My Boxster doesn't have CAGS, but I always shift 1 to 4, or 1 to 3, while driving in traffic.
In non-traffic situations it is not an issue, because if you want to accelerate hard, CAGS does not come into play.

In over 16 months I think the skip-shift only activated 3 times. I like the fact that it helped to eliminate the 'gas-guzzler' tax and for all practical purposes...it was not a problem. The few times it did engage...it was a PITA.

With the LPE 403 package, the skip-shift has been eliminated for good (not that it would have ever engaged now anyway ).
