Hello everyone!
I'm proud to announce that I've now joined the ranks of fellow Vette owners. I finally pulled the trigger in late August. Started out at 6:30 a.m heading to atlantic City and by 4:30 pm was cruising across the Delaware Memorial Bridge in an "07" Atomic Orange sweetheart. I had a "73" and sold it with the proceeds going to buy my first house! I swore someday I'd get another. So here I am @ 50 with 2 kids, a wife (very understanding)and a dog and for the 2nd time in my life a childhood dream has come true.
What a difference compared to my "73" The build quality, ride and performance are just outstanding. You really just want to drive and keep driving! Best fun I've had in years.
Being a new owner I am interested in theft deterrence. I have Lojack on my 05 Pilot and no issues but compared to the Vette the electronics are no match. Can anyone give a thumbs up/down on a Lojack installation? Is it worth it? Any words of caution/advice?
I'm not sure of the technical differences between LoJack and the Onstar capability, but Onstar provides a theft deterrent of the LoJack sort. My insurance seems to think so, as I pay less for my Vette than I did for my 04 350Z!
I'm just a tad older (I guess I must be to use the word "tad"), but I thought my `73 t-top was light-years ahead of the 64 coupe - how could it possibly get any better ?
Our C6 follows several years of Mercedes SL500's and they're still a tough act to follow - but a completely different kind of car.
Commonality? All of `em have had LoJack. It's never had to be activated, but here in the #1 auto theft state in the country, we felt it was money well spent and if you examine their web site, there's some new technology with respect to tracking and notifications that's pretty cool.
The discount from your insurance comapny won't be much, but dealer cost for basic LoJack is just a few hundred bucks - - -anything more is profit for the dealer, so negotiate wisely.
Most importantly, congratulations! Enjoy the new Vette- it's always better with a great looking woman beside you!
Congratulations on your second childhood. If theft deterence is a concern, I'd look into LoJack. If you have OnStar, it's GPS positioning system can assist law enforcement to locate stolen cars (I know someone with a Suburban...it was stolen and the police located it with the help of OnStar).
Personally, I think if someone wants to steal a car bad enough, they'll do it whether it has LoJack or OnStar. I'd keep it well insured and try to minimize parking it in 'questionable' locations.
Worked auto theft for years. If my car gets stolen, I hope I never see it again. Had a Vette long before I went into law enforcement, it was stolen and recovered, and had been stripped and damaged badly. Thank God they finally declared it totalled. No telling how it had been driven before they stopped to strip it.
Some insurance companies don't give a discount for Lojack, I know State Farm doesn't in my state.

My insurance gave me a $3 discount after I sent in the certificate for the Lo Jack. Remember it only works after you report the car stolen, it could be hundreds of miles away by then.

I had a horrible experience with lojack, it caused 4 trips to the dealership, and was finally yanked out.. It was causing many electrical problems in my c6, it would drain the battery and cause the dreaded DBS, anyhow maybe lojack has modified this problem, for me it was a nightmare...I posted a thread on this experience a few weeks back do a search on it...Congrats on you new ride..

Absolutely. No Lojack, no OnStar. If she gets stolen, I want her gone. Nothing good happens to a stolen car and my life is way too short to want to deal with the aftermath.

Why not just leave a signed-over title on the dash? To each their own, but I hear the above all the time and happen to think it is a bit ignorant! For me, it isn't about whether or not I want the car back. It's about being part of the solution and not part of the problem. If all thieves know that they can steal your car and by the simple act of them stealing it, they know you won't want it back, it makes their job a lot easier! The more people who install LoJack type devices (and now there are some even more attractive alternatives that allow you to track your own vehicle), the more of a deterrent it will be.
Devices like LoJack are the very reason that many thieves simply park stolen cars in places like airport parking lots for days to let them "cool off" to be sure they don't have any type of tracking devices. When they do that, they are usually recovered with no damage.
I've had LoJack with early warning for two years and while it doesn't give me any peace of mind that the car won't get stolen, it does at least give me a call on my cell phone if the car should be moved which gives me early warning of the theft and it also gives me some peace of mind that I might be able to make the thieves lives a bit more difficult. The least I can do in return for the f***s stealing my car!
I have both Onstar and Lojack on my vehicles. No need to have them both on one car.
If you get the early warning system from Lojack they will notify you if car starts shaking or door is slammed too hard. Sometimes that gets irritating so I changed it to email only.
I would suggest just going with Onstar since car is already set up for it.

I've been in Auto Crime for a few years, and No Dept. that I know of will say there is ONE best solution. LoJack has a good reputation for recovery, something around 100k vehicles. It is true that the cars are left to cool off for a few days. The Lojack only has a 2 or 3 day life after it is activated, so recovery time is imperitive. OnStar is also good, but GPS needs a signal. Leaving them in a Cement Garage to cool off for a few days takes care of that, and some Chop shops are located in thick walled, multiple story buildings. The Club is useless among experienced theives. The one that hooks to your brake is strong, but the floor board isn't. Cars are being towed with the Alarms wailing and no one thinks a thing of it. So what I'm trying to say is NO one device is ideal. Your best bet is multiple devices, and some common sense.

What's ignorant, my friend, is for you to think I would want my car stolen or leave a signed title on the dash.
I had Networkcar in my previous car G35 Coupe and it worked great. Similar to the Lojack, however it is virtually impossible to locate let alone see. The transmitter and antenna are hidden.
The Great thing I enjoyed about it is you can go online and see your car at anytime, where it been, if it moving or sitting... I used to call my wife and ask her why she at this and that location and she hated it because it's almost like spying
I plan on installing it since I had it removed from my other car.

Sorry. Not meaning to flame and I guess "ignorant" was a poor choice of word(s). I was just playing Devil's Advocate. Somewhere between the people who don't want their car back if it is "touched" by someone else and those who would want it back just to spite the criminal there is a happy medium.

Probably most thieves who steal a C6 will know how easy it is to disable OnStar. OnStar was never meant for stolen vehicle recovery as it's primary purpose and is generally not well suited for that as they are all installed in known locations and are easily disabled in a matter of seconds.
The newer systems like MobileGuardian that lets you track your own vehicle and even disable it remotely look a lot more attractive than the older LoJack system if you are in the market today, although I have no experience with them. Unfortunately none of these were available two years ago when I got my LoJack, or at least they were not in the "mainstream" yet. So far, no problems with LoJack and I'm not paranoid enough to tear out the LoJack and/or install something newer.

I agree with those that are apprehensive about recovering a stolen car. My wife's car was stolen (1981 in San Antonio) out of a friend's garage. It was dark in the garage which provided the theives the perfect opportunity/setting to load up my friend's valuables, then make a hasty retreat. We surmised that it was a hasty retreat because we think the theives thought they were stealing a "Vette". Once they got it in the bright daylight they realized it was a "Che-Vette" and ditched it about two miles from the house!!
When the cops called to come get the car, I went to the impound and as far as the eye could see there were burned and wrecked cars - I didn't expect much would be left of my poor little car. Turn's out that the only thing damaged was a headlight (by the wrecker). There wasn't anything even worth stripping.
I pick up my REAL Vette Monday - it has Onstar - and hopefully it will never need to be used!
Good luck with your new ride.
