OnStar is no different than insurance. You hope you never need it, but if you do it can be a life saver. It can open your door in a lock out. It can track a stolen car. And, it will call for help if you are unable to when an airbag is deployed. Just ask some of the people whose lives were saved by OnStar. I think that it is well worth the price. However, you are free to either not order the option or not renew it.
I have never lost my keys. Ever. Your probably getting your car back if a joyrider takes it whether you have onstar or not but you will wish you didn't. If its a pro they will have onstar dead in seconds and you will not see your car again. Either way onstar is no real help. It also makes a crappy cell phone without a fraction of the functionality of a good bluetooth kit. Half the people who used the remote diagnostics on here reported that onstar failed to figure out what if anything was wrong. Even if it does your still on the side of the road or not. In other words it wont make your car run when it breaks down and if its not broke down they haven't done anything but provided you with an error code. In my mind about the only thing onstar actually does that would have any value to me is send accident notification. I dislike their fear mongering though because a person is statistically more likely to get struck by lightening than have their life saved by onstar. Also on my wifes bmw (I think their version is called bmwassist) whether you sign up or not the accident notification always works. If onstar cares so much they why don't they provide that service?
Of coarse a lot less people would have it if it were not for the fact that its often bundled into otherwise desirable option packages and that dealers get a bonus outside of the option profit for selling it separately which is why people like Kerbecks have it on every car they order for stock.
Talk about a corporate wet dream. Charge 10 times the equipment cost for something that will then generate recurring income that is nearly pure profit and provides next to nothing. Somebodys got to be laughing somewhere but it wont be at my expense.
On-Star, while mat not appeal to many, is a good service. When you need it. I have had On-Star on 2 pick-ups and 2 SUV's. I have had to use On-Star service twice. One time for being bone headed and locked the keys in the Yukon. The other was more serious, I was involved in an accident on an interstate in the late evening.
Is On-Star worth it? Keep in mind, it is like insurance policy. Hope never to use it, but, hey it's there when needed.
Onstar is a piece of mind and well worth the cost...car gets stolen, keys locked out, get in a wreck, car breaks down, vehicle diagnostics, etc..

Profit is the main reason. Other than that, the dealer could care less. He isn't the one getting the phone calls asking for a renewal

Again, the thread is not on the merits of Onstar ................. It's about Onstar bugging the crap out of someone to renew the service. A service he does not want !

There is no extra profit for cars with Onstar that has nothing to do with it, The fact is that it is an easy sell you can talk people into it. and of course your saying not me if i dont want im not buying it but your on a computer not on my lot.
How many of you would bitch if Onstar called your house while you were on the other line with someone else and you could not hang up the phone until you listened to the entire message.
Its about FORCING you to listen to it that pisses alot of people off.
THe first year service is included in the option. In case you did not know, nothing in life is free.
Look at your 3 FREE months of XM. A Sirius GM1 until cost $100 so what is GM paying for XM car units and how much are they charging us for the option? I would not dobt if XM gives them the units or even pays GM to put them in.
So, there i was. In the parking lot. Started up the Vett. My car starts talking to me. Wait, no, its ON STAR! It is a forced advertisement message from ON STAR telling me my subscription to ON STAR is almost expired. And, if i do not want ON STAR service to stop, press the ON STAR button!!
I have not used ON STAR to date. Do not intend to. Never intended to. I could not turn off the message from big brother. I was forced to listen to the advertisement. The radio stopped. I tried to turn on some tunes. But, no. ON STAR had to complete its message to me. Anyone else get to hear the unsolicited message at the end of your free subscription? I felt out of control. I could do nothing. I was pelted by an ON STAR spam message and could not choose to ignore it or turn it off. What a powerless feeling. Hopefully, that was the last attempt to get me on board for a subscription. We'll see if the junk ON STAR messages continue. (?)
Take a chill pill, love onstar and would`nt have a car without it again.

Well we cance each other out I WILL not have a car with it.
I'm not saying installed and not actavaited, I mean WILL not have that junk in any car/truck I buy.
Good chance the cars/truck I have are the last GMs I buy.

Now that is amazing. You will not buy a car that has a potentially life saving feature in it, that you can disconnect/not renew if you want? That makes about as much sense as jumping into a bathtub filled with razor baldes.
Onstar came with my car. Haven't had to use and I hope I don't ever need it. If I get more than one renewal notice, I will also bitch I may not whine here, but I will complain to someone in the food chain. I hate pushy sales. I understand the need to remind a prospective customer that his service is about to expire, but a little decorum please.
Why does everybody blame big brother? The government's got nothing to do with it. It's called free enterprise. You got one year of free OnStar and you're complaining about them trying to get you to keep it.
We won't complain if you don't keep us up to date on what OnStar does next.
When cable TV started, they said commercial free. Don't see that anymore. However, we get to listen to 5 - 6 commercials every couple of minutes now. Isn't life great.
This is not a commercial... I have Onstar on my Vette and have not used it yet, but I have it as a backup phone if my cell is broke, lost or not getting a signal. In my Chevy pickup I used it three times when I locked my keys inside. Really glad I had it all three times. I love the emails my car sends me telling me how it's doing. If my car is ever stolen hopefully they can help locate it. If I get into an accident and my airbags deploy it will notify police/ambulance even if I'm unconscious. Lastly, if I lose my car in a huge parking lot (not likely but possible), Onstar will set off the horn so I can hone in on it. It's not that much money to me and it gives me a little piece of mind so I spring for the basic package.
As far as the message goes, never got one, but if I did I would just push the button or turn the car off if I did not want to listen to it.
