A4 vs A6. I was origionally looking for a C6 with the 6 speed auto. However I found a good deal on an A4 and it works well with my trade.
What kind of milage difference is there between the 2? How are they different in drivability? Anything else I should take into consideration?
Thanks
Both the A4 & A6 work great. The big diff is the paddle shifting. The A4 gets better mileage by 1 mpg but the A6 has a fun factor. I had 5 A4s and my A6 is a whole differant beast. The mileage diff is due to the rear end ratios.
Also which usually has better dyno and or track numbers? I would absolutly love the paddle shifters. However I am having C6 fever and I am afraid of passing up a good deal. Like I said I don't think it is worth an extra 9k or so. If I found a similar deal on the A6 I would go that route first.

I don't know that the rear gearing has much to do with it. My A4 has the 3.15 and gets 28-30 regularly @75mph. I also noticed that in the A6 trans there is no gear that is 1:1.
If you can get it for 37K I would do it. Is it loaded? I pull my A4 down and shift it manually sometimes and you better watch out if you do cause she will let loose. I had mine tuned and I love it. 6 gears sounds nice but for me at least I doubt I would be a big user of the paddles. I'm a traditional right hand on the shifter left hand on the wheel driver. When I got my A4 I too got it 10K less and that extra $$$ was nice when I added a few mods.

I don't see how that's possible that an A4 would get better gas mileage over the A6. The A6 car will have lower rpms on the highway even over a 2.73 geared A4!
Over the last few months I've been wrestling over the idea of whether or not to go for an 05 or 06 when I'm finally ready to buy a C6, and I've come to the conclusion that I must have an A6 even though the used prices on 05s are so much better. With the A6s much better overall first gear ratio it's going to feel a lot quicker off the line than an A4 (even a 3.15 A4) and having more gears also means it won't fall out of it's powerband as much on the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. So the A6 will definitely run quicker quarter miles. Nobody with an A4 C6 has even come close to the 12.21 quarter mile run by LS1LT1 in his 2006 A6.
Had them both and the a4 is no slouch out of the hole, but does have some dead spots in rolling acceleration. The a6 is really a 4 speed with two overdrive gears so it effectively gives you one more gear and that really makes a difference in plugging up the holes that used to annoy me with the a4. As for the paddles, there is the same delay as if you manually shifted the a4. I only really use them on back roads with turns. I enjoy the driving characteristics of the a6 over my old a4, in the sport mode it always seems ready to respond at an rpm that finds power.

Transmission aside, the $9K difference is for a two year old car.
The 06 C6 had some improvements such as transmission and rear assembly and some cosmetics.
The 05 will have one year left on the warranty, the 07 will have 5 years (new for 07).

I've only had one A4 but this A6 is different animal. Best of both worlds with the paddle shifter. There's a price for everything and the only thing that matters is what you're willing to pay. You can't really lose now can you? Good luck...
If the A4 has 2.73's in the transaxle it will be a dog out of the hole (I know, I had an '04 A4 with 2.73's and it didn't feel like a Vette until I had 3.42's installed). If the A4 has 3.15's or better, then it will perform rather well.
The A6 is not an A4 with 2 overdrives, it is actually setup quite a bit differently in the gearing department. An A6 with the standard 2.53's will have a ratio slightly better than a 6 speed manual out of the hole. It's almost as if you have somewhere between 3.73's and 4.10's in the rear.
I'd avoid the '06 A6 due to the transaxle breakage issues that were redesigned in the '07's.

It is my understanding that the breakage was with the 05 differential housings and that was redesigned for 06. The only difference I've read with the 07 A6 is that the have eliminated some of the paddle lag.
I have a question regarding the A6, is is geared very similar to the M6? Do they have similar 0-60 times, A6 vs. M6?
Yes The A6 and M6 have very similar 0-60 times both cars run 0-60 under 4.5seconds..the A6 will do 60 in 4.3-4.4 seconds and the M6 Z51 will do 0-60 in 4.1-4.3 seconds depending on how well you can shift. But most drivers can't shift like a pro so most A6's will out run M6 drivers. A6s also have some of the best 1/4mile drag times at the top with the best M6 Z51s.
In time as long as GM keeps improving the Automatics with paddleshift we will start seeing The paddleshifts outrunning the best manual drivers. Just like how Porsche and Audi's systems out run the same car in a manual.
If porsche can make an automatic with a torque converter out run the Manual version GM can do it too.

Back to the thread..The A6 is faster...I'd go for an A6.

How consistent is that among the A6 cars? That is very dang quick if the car was stock. I'm curious as whether this an out of the ordinary number because I don't recall even a lot of MN6's running this quick.

The car is not loaded. It has 3LT and an auto that seems to be about it. To be honest I don't really care about Nav and dual roofs. I wouldn't mine the Z51 package (sorry if that isn't the right number) but I am not going to shoot down a good deal over that.
