Quite awhile back I read that if the fuel tank was over filled that the gas would run down into the car itself. Ive tried to find the forums that spoke on this issue but have had no luck in finding them. I believe the problems were with the 05 but was wondering if anyone knew if the problem still exists with newer models or if it ever existed at all. I do follow the advice of those forums to not try and top off the fuel tank. Is it still necessary to be that cautious?
I picked up my 2006 coupe at the museum and my host knew about the "no top off" rule which I got here. It is not that it runs into the car but that there is so little room to top off that it will come out and run down the outside of the car.
I have a 07 and find it very hard to fill the tank the pumps keeps shutting off. Also if you top off it will over fill I don't think it goes on the inside of the car but it will go all over the outside.

At the first click of the gasoline nozzel stop fueling! If you wait a second longer it will splash out. It happened to me twice, but now I have the hang of it.
I don't buy gas at very many different stations. When I buy at my local BP station, I lock the nozzle on the lowest flow and don't ever try to top it off. Never have had a problems so far in 6 months with my 06 coupe.
When I picked up my 07 at the museum, my host told me that topping off the fuel after it shuts off can mess up the gas gauge.
They apparently have had some gauge problems and have traced it to overfilling the tanks.
FYI the C6 has 2 fuel tanks.
I generally wait until the low fuel warning before buying gas, then I know if it stops before around 15.5 gallons, that I can safely restart fueling without fear of over fill accidents. But when it clicks off in the 15 or so gallon range, it's done.
Once and a while I have over filled my tank, and the gas has overflowed into the well around the gas cap. There is a drain hole in this well which allows the fuel to drain inside the body and discharge in front of the left rear wheel. I have never had the fuel overflow onto the outside of the body. Believe me I don't try this everytime it just happens once and while. When this does happen I can smell the fuel for about mile until it dries out. I guess on the inside of the fender well.
I think this is the information the O/P was interested in:
Checking the [C6] service manual it's shows a vent that runs from just below the flapper in the filler hose to the top of both tanks. It tells how to replace the fuel filler compartment and door and does not mention an over flow tube like most cars have. Looking at mine I see a little hole with nothing attached to it for the fuel to drop down. Not a very good design.
I am an engineer and I introduce new products to customers all the time. GM should have anticipated this problem. I had a C5 for 3 years and always topped it off. There is a drain tube in the overflow cup. This is definately a GM design issue. If they new about it, they should have at the least put a warning on the fuel door or mentioned it in the manual. Saying I am at fault for filling up my tank and that I should know better is like saying a child should know not touch a hot stove before they learn about the danger.
How can topping off screw up a gas gage? On my '07, when the hose automatically pops off, the tank will take no more gas. It gets topped off once a week.
Definately not isolated to the 05's nor necissarily a problem at all.
Just don't try to top off and you'll be fine.
By the way, there have been many implications in this forum that the 05's were full of nothing but problems..., But from what I've read in the many posts, the 06's and 07's aren't worthy of being put on a pedistal either... just my observation and $0.02. Happy New Year everyone

I don't believe this situation has anything to do with the 2005 model year. I have a 2005 and I've never had a problem filling-up. I'm usually careful in the process and I generally stop when the pump shuts-off. I think most gas stations even post signs not to 'over-fill.'
Thanks for your responses guys, and I was not in any way trying to lay a bad rap on the 05 corvettes. My apology to anyone who may have thought so. Thanks again and happy new year to all
Excellent thread! I fueled my C6 for the first time and now I have learned to stand back a couple of feet to protect my shoes and not to top it off.
OK...if you have owned your vette since May 05 and you still have to stand back 2' when fueling, the C6 enforcement officers will be by shortly to pick up your car.
