It produces a small amount of light on the console area at night so that you can see in that area. To check the effect, sit in a dark area at night with your car running, and put your finger over the light. You will see how the console area darkens. It helps me put my soda can in the drink holder at night.

I much preferred it when it was in the mirror (C5) and it somewhat illuminated the center console. I don't understand why it is over the passenger's side-and actually hadn't noticed it until it was mentioned on the Forum.
