Sure a Z06 is the real thing but can I not get pretty close to it with some mods to a 6.0 like the ZL465 package.
What I really want to know is what you in the know would do to a 6.0 to get it close to a Z06 but save about $25K. I want to purchase one in the next few weeks. Sold my 81 and might sell my 69 and keep my 74. I am just thinking at this point in my life I want a little more creature comforts, great ac, great ride, great seats etc. Thanks Paul
There is a lot more to the Z than just HP, if you like doing mods I am sure you could get similar or much greater power, but you will never have the fully engineered package.
Things like the suspension, wheels, brakes, hardtop, Dry sump, etc, would end up costing as much to properly duplicate.
If you want to be close or better in power, that is pretty easy. Difference in cost from coupe to Z06 right now is about $35K.
1. Put a 125 shot of N2O on it as stock (<$1000 installed plus ongoing bottle costs). If you want power on demand you should beat the Z06 with it.
2. Add a Procharger system to the stock engine ($8000 installed). You can run much more power than the stock Z06.
3. Do an APS Twin Turbo system ($14-15M installed). Dynotech does a great package that had run in the 10s in the 1/4 for that. May be pricier than you want but it is a great package.
If you want the handling, braking, styling, etc, it can get pricey.
Long tubes
CAI
Cam (mild to med)
Exhaust (more for sound reasons)
Tune
and you've got a beast putting at least 400hp to the pavement. If you get ambitous, you can add a supercharger (Procharger) and then you're really cookin!
I too am concidering the SLP 465 package. Does anyone have an opinion on it?
Seems awful pricey for what it delivers. I think the whole is much less than the sum of the parts on this one. YMMV.
Also, I didn't suggest the header, intake, cam, tune option because that does not put him at Z06 power levels. Certainly the above does wake up the car though.
A friend of mine said the price was too high and that he thinks SLP is over rated BUT if you take into account the fact that you get a pre-programed ecu specifly for the mods and the fact that things like the headers and exhaust are going to cost $$$ no matter where you buy them..... I'm still thinking about it.... a cam is not an option for me because I have an Auto.... I know I could do a stall converter but IMO that really is not worth the trouble....
CAI, Headers, Tune, Cam is a pretty dang inexpensive option when considering the alternatives. If you want to spend the extra $$, you could make a wicked fast car.
I really do think I would be happy with the 465HP package and it has all of the basic things for anything in the future. If I do the ZL 465 package and it still isnt enough, It will be more than ready for a S/C or Turbo kit.... I think the 465 package is the way to go... I have ALMOST talked myself into it
Maybe I'm missing something (I often do). My 2005 C6 cost about $55,000 to drive it away (less optioned and even used C6's cost even less). What does a new Z06 cost....$80,000-$85,000? You want to save $25,000 off the price of a new Z06. I quess it depends what you have in your car but put another way....how much are you willing to spend on modifications to your C6?
To me I just want to have my personal signature on it, ie the mods. I am never happy with what the factory give and I only want a little more as I know its not to expensive for a little more.

At $8,000 the procharger and a a great tune is the most prudent approach to attaining Z-06 power. End of story.
The 465 ZL pkg that was in a magazine a few months ago, was kinda misleading. You had to get the ENTIRE Mid America PKG and those PS2s and 3.90 for the rear to get the numbers they threw on the article. As far as measuring up to the Z, well, you can 505BHP in a C6 and still lose to a stock Z, the car is better balanced and lighter. I just dyno'd at 406 RWHP and they told me they had some stock Z's base lining at the 420-440 rwhp level. Mine was after headers, cam and stat w/tune.
I'd say if you have a C6, carefully select the kinda upgrades you want depending on what you're going to do with it.
