If you can, Get a C6.
Skip the C5 you will be happier with the C6 in the end.
The C5 is cool, but the C6 is years ahead in my opinion.
I have an 05 C6 Z51 MZ6 and it has been a solid car. It had some dead battery issues that were addresed under warranty with a BCM Reflash and new battery and has been solid since.

My friends that have C5's come and see my C6 and they are one by one trading in thier C5's for a C6. Thats how cool they are.
Get the C6, you wont be dissapointed at all.

Be sure to check the service history as the others have stated, you can get the VIN of the car you are looking and and get service history checked by a fellow forum member if the car is not at a GM dealer.

The 05 year Crank Bolt issue is only an issue if the car exibits a problem. That is not a recall. Not all 05's in the early range are affected...
Roof recall is the biggest thing...You dont want the roof to fly off...

Good luck on your Purchase !
Dont forget to Wave to your fellow vettes on the road!

I've had two 05's, and they are the most reliable cars I've ever owned. In fact, I had two C5's - a 01 and 03, which would be the 5th and 7th year of C5 production. They both had problems that were well known throughout the C5 run but were never fixed by GM.

The only common problems on the 05s were the crank pully bolt, Dead Battery Syndrom (DBS) and the top. The pully bolt only effected early cars, and it would have failed or been fixed by now. DBS would also likely have happened by now, and they seem to have a fix for it, and they have been recalled for the top problem.

BTW, neither of my C6's have suffered any of these issues. Neither of them has been to the shop for anything.

Am I being too paranoid concerning the '05 & '06's?? What are the known problems with them...GM fixing them adequately?? Is the '07 problem free??

Thanks, Bob
"problem free"--what planet are you from? No one makes a "problem free" car. Not even the almighty foreigners. This forum, as always, is a place to voice problems and concerns. We just want it to be the best there is. That doesn't mean there is always something wrong. IMHO you need to go out there and become a CORVETTE owner and take your chances, just like you would in anyother car you purchased. Buy your "dream" car.

Other than the roof and changing of differential lub, I have had no problems. I love the car!

Default Get what you want to afford

My 05/A4 has no issues and I love it and would not consider trading up so to speak to start all over again. Take 10 cars any years and see what issues they have. Maybe 3-4 out of 10 any year visit the dealer often and the others seldom or not at all. Can't go by the year.

The C6 is very quiet luxurious ride inside. The C5 tends to rattle inside
especially as they get older. Test drive with the radio off then make up your mind.

I bought an '05 new, built Nov. '04, and it has been problem-free. It's only been back to the dealer for visits.

Gonna pick up a 7986 mile A4 '05 tomorrow. Built Feb 05. Service records show a wheel sensor replaced. Previous owner says no other problems...reason he got rid of it was for an '07 Vert.

Thanks for the good advice.

Should the wave be accompanied by an ear to ear grin?? Hope so...gonna be hard to stop smiling as I approach another Vette

With that build date, it should be well out of the crank pulley bolt problem range, and as an A4, very unlikely to experience DBS. A painted roof should be inspected under the recent recall, I'd ask about that and have it inspected if not. Congrats! (The grin is more or less permanent. )

You're being too paranoid. While the '05 model had some problems there are plenty of low mile, good quality early cars out there to be missing out on such a great automobile. I have a Precision Red 2005. The color is of note only because they discontinued the color in October of 2004 so yeah, it is a very early C6. My car has been bullet proof and it has just a shade over 13,000 currently. I've owned a 1984 C4, a 1997 C5 and now a 2005 C6. I've been lucky but for all my first model year cars I've had a fantastic owner experience. Still, do check the car out completely and have the VIN run thru the GM VIS to get some piece of mind as to the type of work that has been done. There really should be no more concern over a well made, well maintained 2005 then you have over a new 2007. Just enter the transaction with an open mind and open eyes. The only concern for you will be the features that were added (or subtracted) in the newer models as compared to the '05. Best of luck in your search, ask many questions and don't be afraid to walk away from a car that you don't think is perfect. Potential problems could include:

Painted roof panel delamination.
Crank pulley bolt backing out.
Differential leak.
DBS (dead battery syndrome, do a search) on MN6 cars.

Missing features would include:
A6 transmission replaces A4.
Steering wheel mounted audio controls.
Deletion of under hood light.

The crankshaft pulley was the only issue of note peculiar to '05s.

Had a C5 (2001) that had some problems. Mostly out of warranty... Primarily associated with electronics. Very hard to find and expensive to fix. Two motors for the headlight doors. Burned a little oil, usually a quart between servicing.

I just celebrated a year with the 2006 C6 with NO problems. This car is so much better made that the C5 it's almost not worth comparing. I did take the top in for the recall but I went with a T top almost out of the gate so it really didn't matter.

The other big difference between the C5 and the C6 is the creature comforts and they are many. This is truly a generation upgrade.

I have a 05 C6 and the only problem I have had was the fuel door actuator stopped working. I took it in to local dealership one day and came back 2 days later for them to install it. I should have just taken part home if I could have. The "tech" said he needed my gorrilla lock to take the left rear wheel off to get to it. I had to point out the location was in the back left behind the carpet, not in the wheel well.

I have a very early 05 c6. No problems to speak of. IMO buy an 05b if you can find what you want.
