K&N Oil Filter for 2007 Corvette
I am a new member of the forum as of today and a new owner of a 2007 corvette coupe metallic silver with chrome wheels 3LT package. Took delivery of the vehicle November 1, 2006. I have been reading a few threads regarding oil filters for the 2007 model. I plan to make my first oil change at 1,000 miles (currently at 820 miles) and recently purchased a K& N oil filter at Advance Auto Parts. For those out there who may be interested in a K&N
you will need part number HP-1017.

If you install an aftermarket filter and it fails and results in engine damage, good luck.

I doubt if using a K & N oil Filter will cause engine failure.

Why aK&N filter?
The choice is made a lot easier if you take the filters out of their boxes and compare their different weights. You will find that the K&N is much heavier. Why is that important? Because it has more filter material and it is stronger. That said all filters will do a good job if you change them ofter enough. How often, every 3,000 miles is a waste of good oil, unless under extreme driving or short stop and go driving. A couple of things that are helpful. indy-motorwerks has 2 great things to consider. A MAGNETIC OIL DRAIN PLUG replaces stock and OIL FILTERING MAGNET goes on the bottom of filter.both cost less than $10.00 ea. I use both on my cars and think they are good .extra insurance. I also believe that 5W-30 weight is too thin for driving above 32 F. If you read the weight charts it even states 10W-30 is approved above 32F, it seems that too many dont read their manuals and follow the oil cap. GM does that to satisfy the PC crowd and get them off their backs. I have never had an engine problem and have read as much as I can about oil questions, my 07 C-6 got a K&N filter with 10W-30 syn @ 500miles last week. GOOD LUCK whatever WJC

The '07 owner's manual states:
No need to consult a weight chart.
Notice: If you use oils that do not have the
GM4718M Standard designation, you can cause
engine damage not covered by your warranty.
• SAE 5W-30
As shown in the viscosity chart, SAE 5W-30 is
best for your vehicle.
These numbers on an oil container show its
viscosity, or thickness. Do not use other
viscosity oils such as SAE 20W-50.

I had a March Ram Air Kit on another car that used the K & N cone filter and the car ran great. At smog test time every 2 years I had to remove this otherwise it wouldn't pass smog here (visual test) and after so many times hitting the scoop on sidewalk I left it factory stock. It definitely ran better with this kit with K & N Ram air set up. But I have also heard bad things about oil filters that you MUST oil in that too much oil will get onto the MAF and cause you problems.

So wjcook1, I guess the 30w on 10w30 is thicker than the 30w on 5w30 in hot climates. The 5 gives you less wear at start up and the 30 is after warm up. Good luck with your theory.
