Default '07 Fuel Range issue?

I searched the forums for other reports about the issue I am experiencing but did not find any...

I just picked up an '07 Convertible and according to the fuel gauge there was 1/4 tank. The DIC was reporting "Low Range". I then filled the tank and the Fuel Range was reported to be in the neighborhood of 160 or so miles. I have driven for 15 or so miles since filling the tank and the number hasn't jumped up into the 300+ mile or so range which should be expected.

Is this an issue with brand new C6s? Could there be a problem with the fuel sensor being misread (by about half or so)? Anyone else experience this oddity?

Thanks,

Assuming your car had only a few miles on it when you picked it up I'd give it a tank or so for the computer to figure things out.

It had a whopping 12 miles on it... I will monitor as the full tank is depleted.

I thought the range is based on your average miles per gallon to date , so if all you did was some local driving, the average mpg would be low. Reset your average mpg readout back to zero and then go driving on the highway; your range should increase accordingly.

I thought the same thing and did perform the reset after filling the tank. The average MPG shot up to 28+, but the range still didn't reflect a realistic value.

The "average" used to determine range isn't the same as the "average" you see on your dic.

It also isn't total average for the life of the car.

If you don't see a major change in predicted range by the end of the present tank of fuel, then it's time to see the service department.

Agreed.
And the owner's manual is not clear on this point:

range \ fuel economy from the 2007 owner's manual:

"The fuel economy data used to determine fuel
range is an average of recent driving conditions.
As your driving conditions change, this data is
gradually updated automatically.
If the vehicle has been idling for a long time, the
range displayed on the DIC could be abnormally
low. The vehicle must be driven 5–10 miles
(8–16 km) to get an accurate reading. "

- Ray
Thinking perhaps it looks at the most recent 100 miles - or 200 - or some other fairly arbitrary number...

Mine always displays the range before fill upm when driving and after fill up. Maybe a sensor issue?

Thanks,
i'm on my 3rd tank of gas and it's gone steadily upward since i bought my car(had 21 miles on it, mostly because the dealership drives their vettes in and out of the service area every night). first tank said 180. second tank said 260. my third tank is now showing about 285. i have right at 600 miles on her now.

so as you drive more, it should go up and it'll increase more rapidly if you drive on the highway more. after the break-in 500 miles, it should be pretty accurate starting around 1000 i would say.

I appreciate your anecdote as well as the input from others. I will keep an eye on this and if things don't improve by the time I hit the 1,000 mile mark or so I will seek service help. I will follow-up with any progress...

Thanks,
I’m surprised no one else mentioned this. Your dealer ripped you off if you purchased this car new. GM decrees that all new vehicles are to have a full tank of gas upon purchase... I would see about that.
OBTW from what you said your fuel range will straighten out in a couple tank fulls. You will notice if you do a lot of highway driving your range will be longer & visa virusa for local driving.
Enjoy your car
