Im nearly 42 years old. I've never been in an accident other than being bumped in the rear bumper in traffic. (not the Vette) I consider myself a very good driver and so does anyone who's been a passenger with me driving.
However, I'm still getting to know my new C6. I picked it up on January 15 and because of the weather, have not driven it nearly as much as I dream of driving it.
Today looked clear so I thought I would drive it to the bank. Got to a traffic light and waited for it to turn green. I was going to make a left to go onto the highway. The light turned and I started driving. I was anxious to give it a little gas and feel the power.
Well friends, I spun my baby in the middle of the highway and nearly smacked my dream car into the median. It scared the hell out of me. I thought my car was done. Luckily, I missed it and turned it around without a scratch.
A few seconds later when my body had enough time to acclimate to what just happened, my heart started pounding and my knees grew weak.
I know it's really not a big deal but, this is a car I've wanted my whole life and always thought it was out of reach or I wasn't worthy.
I've always had respect for the Vette and the power it has. It's just amazing to me how powerful this thing is. I know the main reason why this happened other than the obvious, me giving too much gas. The roads are very cold here in NJ and therefor so are my tires so, they aren't gripping to well right now. I know this because when a friend of mine took me for a ride in his C6 last year, his tires were tacky after the ride.
I guess I just wanted to share my experience with anyone that could learn from it. I'd hate to read in this forum someone wrecking their dream car like I nearly did.
You wouldn't be the first to go off-roading by driving like this. Get 'er straightened out before using the stupid pedal...you'll be much safer/happier with that technique.
Extra change of drawers might be in order! I thought I was going to loose my new '07 a few weeks ago. Passed between two slow pokes on a bridge/ramp... jumped on it a bit too much. The car did beautifully as it really glued down hard to the road, thankfully. I thought I came close though. Z51 helped me out.
cold tires, frozen asphalt plus 400 horsies makes for 180 degree turns!
I had that happen with some new rain and oil from the road coming up. I decided right then and there to start (season permitting of course) learning how to drive with those 400 ponies with t/c off so I know what to expect! Lots of fun also when its planned!
glad it was just a heart pumper!
to avoid this in the future...as soon as you out of your driveway...do a nice smokie...that'll warm up your tires and you won't have to worry about anything
Glad you didn't smuck it up...your driving skills paid off
God bless you my friend. be careful out there when driving the 400 ponies. i'm glad you didn't ruin the Vette. We can all learn some lessons from your experience.

Accelerating into a turn isn't a smart thing to do with any vehicle. With cold tires on a cold street in a car with plenty of bottom end torque, it is almost suicidal.

This is True...with stock base oem tires and worse with Z51 Supercar oem tires. Not true with Goodyear Eagle F1 AS-C EMT All Season tires...great grip in cold weather below 40 degrees even at WOT.

Nice to hear you made it good save, however I have to ask, what mode were you in? I mean i always drive in competitive mode which shuts off traction control, but maintains yaw control. Just curious.
was on highway last week doing 60 behind slow left lane driver, jumped over a lane got beside him, then i floored it and turned left to get back in fast lane in front of him.. iwas was looking out left window at him to say get out of fast lane dummy when my view changed quick because the back end was coming around..caught me of guard, got it straightend out all good but becareful in the cold.. dont floor it and change lanes quickly...
