highway drifting....what got me was i was looking out left window...looking a head no big deal, i slide around alot, but this time i just started getting a real good view of his front end ,then it hit me oh $hit..im sideways.. you know i was pounding my chest..watch me roar jerk...get out of my way...then oops...
Nice to hear you made it good save, however I have to ask, what mode were you in? I mean i always drive in competitive mode which shuts off traction control, but maintains yaw control. Just curious.
Traction control was on and I have a Z51. It's just weird how it happened. I had it hand washed and just covered it. I'm done until the weather breaks at least 40 degrees.
to avoid this in the future...as soon as you out of your driveway...do a nice smokie...that'll warm up your tires and you won't have to worry about anything
Glad you didn't smuck it up...your driving skills paid off
Im nearly 42 years old. I've never been in an accident other than being bumped in the rear bumper in traffic. (not the Vette) I consider myself a very good driver and so does anyone who's been a passenger with me driving.
However, I'm still getting to know my new C6. I picked it up on January 15 and because of the weather, have not driven it nearly as much as I dream of driving it.
Today looked clear so I thought I would drive it to the bank. Got to a traffic light and waited for it to turn green. I was going to make a left to go onto the highway. The light turned and I started driving. I was anxious to give it a little gas and feel the power.
Well friends, I spun my baby in the middle of the highway and nearly smacked my dream car into the median. It scared the hell out of me. I thought my car was done. Luckily, I missed it and turned it around without a scratch.
A few seconds later when my body had enough time to acclimate to what just happened, my heart started pounding and my knees grew weak.
I know it's really not a big deal but, this is a car I've wanted my whole life and always thought it was out of reach or I wasn't worthy.
I've always had respect for the Vette and the power it has. It's just amazing to me how powerful this thing is. I know the main reason why this happened other than the obvious, me giving too much gas. The roads are very cold here in NJ and therefor so are my tires so, they aren't gripping to well right now. I know this because when a friend of mine took me for a ride in his C6 last year, his tires were tacky after the ride.
I guess I just wanted to share my experience with anyone that could learn from it. I'd hate to read in this forum someone wrecking their dream car like I nearly did.
It's a whole new level of respect.
Just a thought but have you pushed the button on the console and changed to either traction control off or competitive driving. I can slide out the rear in competitive driving mode but not with active handling engaged (or at least not yet : ))

If I did, it was accidentally and I didn't realize I did it. I believe the traction control was on. BTW, I have the same Vette you do. LMB 07 Z51. I love it!
Maybe you should take your car to an open parking lot with no obstacles and actually learn the handling of the car. That's what I did when I got my C6. It is a totally different animal than my C5, and there is no place on the street to really push the C6 and learn its limits & sliding techniques. These cars actually handle very well with the rear end powersliding. (If you know what you're doing & in control, of course). Getting a little sideways and almost losing it is one thing, sliding 180 degrees to a complete stop is another. You lost it!
This is True...with stock base oem tires and worse with Z51 Supercar oem tires. Not true with Goodyear Eagle F1 AS-C EMT All Season tires...great grip in cold weather below 40 degrees even at WOT.
A question of semantics.....I'd say the Goodyear Eagle F1 AS-C EMT is 'better' than the Z51 Supercar tires but I wouldn't say they provide "great grip in cold weather."
Even here is sunny, warm Southern Arizona (where it snowed a few days ago) with temperatures in the 40s I can slowly press the gas peddle to the floor and when hitting higher RPMs in 3rd gear I start spinning my tires. The cold pavement and colder than 'normal' tires just wrecks havoc on traction...in just about any type of tire.
To the OP...inexperience + cold tires + cold asphalt = a spinout. Everything turned-out OK so consider it a learning experience. I recommend you go to the 'poor man's skid pad.' Find a safe, large deserted parking lot on a rainy day where you can practice getting your car to slide (start slowly...you don't have to be going fast). You soon find out where the breaking (not "braking") points are. It's educational and fun!

Oh yea you can! It kicked in, but I was still sideways
oh ya, i felt like a total idiot...been worse if i would of spun out..still sucked, then i was mad at him for causing me to pass on the right.the speed limit is 70..he was at 60..still my fault for flooring it though..
Its rarely good when you let road rage get the best of you. I don't fault you for passing on the right, I do it myself frequently (not illegal here on the freeway). But remember, smooth is fast, jerky is dangerous.

Glad it all turned out ok! I know how you feel! I too have waited for this for so long and honestly, a part of me never thought it would happen.
Now with the day approaching, what worries me is that people just can't understand why I won't be letting them drive it! I'm sorry, but if they want to drive one that badly, they can get a second job and buy one themselves like I did!
One friend who is bound and determined to drive it and "break it in" for me would be hot rodding all over the place in it and probably wreck it!
Now you know why some people just don't belong behind the wheel of something like this! Power is something to be treated with respect.
Glad you didn't get hurt and that your mistake was fairly minor in consequences! Atleast you now have more respect for it and hopefully that will see you through many years of enjoyment!

That's a good idea. I did this kind of stuff when I was a kid and it would snow. I'd go to a large parking lot and see how my car would handle and the best way to respond to a slide or a spin.
I just can't believe the car got away from me today without me really stepping on it. I told my friend a little while ago when he was over and he's convinced there was some ice there. I'm not so sure of this and I told him I thought the pavement was dry.

AMEN Brother!
BTW, a while back when I first told a few of my friends that I was buying a Vette a few of them asked me privately if they could drive it. I was like sure! I'm now reconsidering my decision after this experience. I'm very upset with myself and what could have happened. I can't imagine how I would be if someone else did any damage to my dream machine...
