2005 Nav MP3 Playback
Tried making CD's with Maxell Disk via instructions about 10 times. only one time did i ever get it to see folders but there were no songs names folders just a blank listing of no folders.
All other times it read invalid disk, on the other 9 disks.
I was wondering where do i find the nav part number as i have a Monty red 2005 which is built in July 05.
I want to make sure i have the proper nav system before i try and load the 2 disk upgrade myself. I really would like to do this myself and not have the dealer do it as it is quiet a trip down the hill and sitting there for 3 hours to figure out they need to order the disks etc etc etc...
1. Has anyone had luck with Maxell Disks?
2. I am a electronics tech so i am fairly certian i followed the directions about folder/title legnth/MP3 format etc etc..( I used I tunes and after each failer I went back to the computer and checked the format which was MP3 and I shortened the album folder and titles to 8 characters along with Verision 1.1 for tags)
Thanks for the help as I would like to accomplish this myself and not want to go through the dealer. I just dont want to fry my nav system if it is me creating the disks wrong (or using the wrong type) and putting in a upgrade to the wrong part number of Nav screen.
I had several Maxell CDs that played fine in the 6 disc GM stereo and could not get them to play in the Nav system. Dealer ended up replacing my nav system but still no luck with the new unit. Then I found the CF and threads on the software upgrade. I did not know my NAV's PN but I figured why not try the upgrade and see what happens. I finally decided to take the chance. Come to find out if you try the software upgrade and your unit has that version it will simply tell you that it does not recognize the disc. When I got this message the first time I thought it might have soemthing to do with how I burn the discs so I burned the software discs again on different brands of disc and that still did not work. Finally I took it to the dealer and had them use their original discs and got the same message. They put the Tech 2 unit on it and found the unit was in the range that should play MP3s and not need the update.
At this point I started thinking maybe it's my discs or the software I used. I tried a few more things and finally had a glimor of hope when the unit read one of the Maxell discs enoguh to know it was MP3 but the system frooze on the screen with artist, title, & album; I had to shut the car off and let the power to the radio time out before it would let me do anything again.
While hunting around the house for a disc with differnt cd burning software I found an old MP3 disc (generic disc brand) and tried it; worked perfect. the problem now is that I didn't remeber what software I used to burn the disc.
I started trying new softwares and I bought the compusa brand CDs. I burned one disc via Itunes and it worked but Itunes kept forcing my songs in to folders that I had not set up. I tried a few other software options and finnally found consistent results with Roxio Easy CD creator 6. I use the classic creator feature with a few tweaked settings and I am getting playable discs every time now.
Good luck!
Basically, iTunes will work fine (mostly )for burning your MP3s .. if you want to have folders (say for multiple CDs or Albums) do a SORT by ALBUM NAME right before you burn. If you want all your songs in a single folder (say for example, you have a bunch of Metal songs, or ROCK or Jazz and want one disk that randomizes the play) do a sort by song title before you burn.
Some notes on using itunes - this assumes you already have the files imported into iTUNEs and are in MP3 format ...
1. You may want to rename the actual song file names (within windows explorer - outside of iTUNES) ...to something shorter.
2. Within iTunes, create a NEW playlist (hit the + key lower left side) for the CD you wish to make.
3. Add the songs you want on the CD to the playlist - a number of ways to do this including right clicking the song(s) in question and using SHOW IN PLAYLIST - or just drag them to the new playlist.
4. Make sure all the song titles, artist names, etc are no more than 22 characters.
5. When you have all the songs in the playlist, and are ready to burn - select them all then RIGHT CLICK the mouse - CONVERT ID3 tags and use V1.0 or V1.1.
6. Click on the NAME column to sort by name if you want ONE FOLDER with all songs - click on the ALBUM column if you want iTunes to put your songs in folders by album name.
7. Go to EDIT - Preferences - ADVANCED - BURNING - make sure itunes uses MP3 as output type - also maybe select 1X or 2X for burn speed as the stereo is fussy on this depending on media type.
Once the upgrade is completed, file naming becomes the difficult part in creating a useable disc. Too many characters and the files ignored by the radio. Also, the disc has to be formatted as an MP3 disc, not just have a bunch of MP3 files copied onto it. Some software does this properly but using Windows to copy files is insufficient. Again, see the extended explanations already on the forum.
As for finding the part number, I went to a dealership to have them use a Tech II reader to access the info.

Thanks again being on the see saw at the end of 05 had made me almost accept no MP3. And i really dont want the dealer messing with it *just* yet.
