Default Why does this happen?

Say, for instance, I stop at a gas station......I get out to pump the gas and, leaving the door open & the keys in the car, I pump my gas. When I get back in the car, however, & start it, the horn honks 3 times as if an alarm were going off.

Is this just because I left my keys (i.e., fob) in the car?

It's just warning you that you left your keys in the car. It's like an electronic hug because it's worried about you.

The car thinks you left the keys in the car when the door finally shut. It does not know you left it open while gassing up the car, it thinks you got out, shut the door and the keys are still in the car so it honks. Even if you take the keys with you when you get out, if you leave the door open then get back in it will honk because you never closed the door with the keys removed from the car.

Simply because you left the keys in the car. It doesn't know that you got out because you left the door open. If you were to repeat the same procedure but close the door immediately when you got out it would honk three times then. Keep in mind it is dangerous to leave the keys in the car if you have the autolock set to on in the options in the DIC. It will. It will also lock if they are in the back compartment (like in a gym bag or a jacket) as the receiver antenna won't pick up the transmitter back there.

Being a chick, I love what you said - "an electronic hug" - love it! Ok, so I'll always keep my key fob on me & shut the door.

Thanks for all the replies!

Close the door completely, taking the fob with you (don't worry about the "keys") when you get out to pump gas.

I would not advise leaving the keys in the car when you're not in it... that goes for any car. It's a bad habit, could lead to getting locked out of your car eventually.

More importantly, especially these days, leaving keys in a car when you're not in the car would just make things that much easier for a carjacker to jump right in, start her up and take off before you could really do anything about it, even if you are standing nearby.

This type of stuff happens REALLY fast and when you least expect it... the surprise element will greatly decrease your ability to respond as effectively as you'd think. Having the key in your pocket (instead of inside the car) greatly reduces the chance of the car disappearing before you even have a chance to comprehend what's going on.

You can turn this feature off. It's called "FOB Reminder" located within the DIC Personal Settings.

I turned it off once I got used to the idea of never taking the FOB out of my pocket. Use at your own risk.

There are always a bunch of threads on this subject... Easiest thing to do is to put the FOB and key in your pocket and forget about it. I've heard others who say they wear it around their neck. Figure out the most convenient way for you to keep the FOB and key on your person at all times when your out with your car and make it a habit. You need to keep the key with you as well, you never know when the last time the battery is going to power the FOB. If your luck is like mine, it won't be when you are sitting comfortably in your own driveway or garage. When all else fails, hope you have Onstar and a phone.

Always leave the fob/key in your pocket. Many less chances of getting into trouble that way!!! As the car wil unlock when you grab the door why take a chance of locking yourself out by leaving the cars in the car.

I never leave my cars in the car.

Actually, the original post had nothing to do with leaving the keys in the car. It started because the OP left the door open while being out of the car for a few minutes and the car "thought" he'd left the keys in the car.
